Good news for Lord of the Rings fans.

New Line have finally caved and opened their wallets (stuffed with $3bn in takings) to pay Peter Jackson and Weta so they will be starting work on 2 prequels based on the Hobbit filmed simultaneously and released Christmas 2010 & 2011.

New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye who had previously said Jackson would never make The Hobbit "during my watch" is nowhere to be seen.

Busy times then for Jackson and his favourite cg actor Andy Serkis then who are already committed to filming the TinTin trilogy of Beowulf style CG films with Stephen Spielberg.

having read the LotR in the 70's (during typing class) ... and having 'lived through' all of the poor (IMHO) animated versions ... I had arrived at the conclusion that the movie couldn't be laid to celluloid properly .. this was, of course, before modern special effects tech had reached maturity

I think Peter Jackson NAILED it .. it really couldn't have been better, or closer, to the way that I had envisioned it whilst reading amid the tap-tap-tappage of students eagerly seeking a passing grade in text-to-paper transference

my only regret, at the time, was that he didn't start with the Hobbit .. since the story begins there ... to think of what a juggling act it must have been to orchestrate 3 movies of that scale ....

if you watch the 'director's narrative' version, you find out that the very first scene they shot was 'the fellowship' emerging from the caverns of Moira, where Gandalf had prevented the Balrog from passing ... and plummeted to the dark depths ... The actor for Gandalf (Ian McKellen) hadn't even been hired yet

yeah, we got all three with all the 'extra' footage... makes for a real marathon...

"NAILED it" is the operative phrase, it was one of the few times I could say the visual impact of a movie version lived up to the mythical vision of the books.

oh .. and .. if you watch the 'actor's narrative' version, you find out stuff, like: ...

"yeah, I think Orlando was out to lunch when we shot this scene"

rippingly good stuff!!

Peter Jackson was born in Pukerua Bay, NEW ZEALAND :) and his first feature film, Bad Taste, was filmed there at a total cost of around $25,000. Released 1987.

and, you failed to mention .. YOU bought the collector's edition, and you engage all of your house guests in rapt debate over its nuances

what'd I win?

I am not a student of his earlier works .. he, kinda, emerged onto the scene with LoTR .. a ONE-HIT-WONDER .. but wotta hit 'twas ..

It put New Zealand on the map for me .. of course I haven't exactly found where on the map, somebody pointed at a globe once .. but you know how globes are, all round and stuff, I didn't catch where it was

Actually . . . I have never read LOTR . . . or seen the movie.

"Jackson released a 'mockumentary', Forgotten Silver (1995). This claimed to tell the story of (fictional) New Zealand film pioneer Colin McKenzie who had supposedly invented colour film and 'talkies', and attempted to make an epic film of Salome before being killed in the Spanish Civil War and forgotten by the world. The film was screened on New Zealand television as if it were fact, and its spoof nature was only revealed the following day. Many people were outraged at being fooled, and the number of people who believed the increasingly improbable story is testimony to Jackson's skill at playing on the New Zealand national myth of a nation of innovators and forgotten trail-blazers."

He has given NZ$500,000 to stem cell research.

He purchased a church in Wellington for approximately $10 million, saving it from demolition.
