Go to the "Suggested Software" section. That will give you an idea of where you need to start.

If you have big bucks consider Photoshop and some 3D modeling/rendering program. I prefer Lightwave. 3DS Max has a frustrating interface, an inferior renderer and it is much more expensive. If you are poor ; ) Bryce is good at making abstacts and landscapes, and Photoshop Elements is also a very good program for its price.
