Prospective Purchasers

It occurred to me reading the threads here that many people seem to be considering treating themselves to some new kit and I remembered that we were due a big trade fair soon.

PMA08 is one of the biggest and is in Vegas at the end of this month. Manufacturers normally use these events to launch new model ranges so anyone considering purchases may want to hold off for a while to either see what gets released or to snap up a bargain when existing stock gets discounted ahead of the arrival of any announced replacements.

The jungle drums are pretty quiet these days on anticipated announcements presumably as they have been wrong footed so many times recently. It would be nice if the Canon 7D/5D MkII saw the light of day at last, I’m not sure if Nikon have anything in the pipeline either but i’d imagine the likes of Sigma and Tamron will be rolling out more Nikon friendly product upgrades.

so the 5D fund has taken a bit of a hammering then :-)

Ok – had a quick scout around the rumour mills re the PMA show – all pretty much as expected. Most Canon ‘insiders’ quoted as saying the 5D2/7D/3D (whatever it will be called) will be announced the week before the show replete with much improved specs and far greater body durability with full weather sealing – allowing it to go out in the field for a change. Lots of glassware and a gazillion printers and compacts from all angles.

Most surprising is that it is expected that both Canon and Nikon will upgrade their flagship cameras before the ink has even dried on the packaging. Canon’s 1DMkIII has been plagued with technical difficulties and that looks likely to be upgraded to a MkIIIN with improved specs and the gremlins ironed out. Existing purchasers will be apparently offered a free upgrade to the new model.

Nikon’s D3 hasn’t had so many technical issues but has suffered widespread ambivalence from its user base with what could be easily interpreted as catastrophically poor advance orders. Apparently a D3X is in the offing that will feature pretty much the same specs everybody originally expected i.e. Sony’s 20+MP FF sensor.

Although both cams may not be announced at PMA they are expected to reach the market before the summer’s Olympics in a bid to win the hearts of the worlds pro sports snappers.

I've heard good rumblings about the 1Ds MkIII, but that's all I've got to offer

the show hasnt even kicked off yet and the manufacturers are rushing out press releases for their new gear - lots of interesting stuff announced already including lots of really well specced cameras from Canon, Samsung, Fuji & Pentax.

Not much occuring in the first days of this years show so far - only big news so far being Sony showing off a rather ungainly prototype of their new flagship Alpha DSLR available later this year and featuring the full frame 24.6MP sensor licensed to (but so far unused) Nikon last year.

So I realize a lot of new things were announced, but does anyone have any idea when a price cut-if any-is going to be made on the older stuff?
