There have been one or two lightning shots occassionally. I have tried this myself with no success. I think the easiest way would be to have a camera with a sports mode or very fast shutter speed, and continuous shooting mode would be very helpful. But I think in the end it comes down to your reaction speed.

Shazam! lol When you feel your hair start to stand up start taking pictures fast Joke! Easiest way to capture lightning is at night. Lock you shutter open when the storm intensifies. You can also build yourself a lightning activated shutter release. See HERE These are also commercially available. Good luck:-)

With a digital camera, continuous shot mode with a tripod is the best way I have found to take lightning shots. There are several examples of that method on the first page of my gallery.

I hold my camera up, then summon the powers given to me by Zeus to call upon lighting as I press the shutter. This is the simplest method for me.

(sorry I can't upload the photo, the gov is currently watching me and looking for proof of my gifts, maybe later)

I see your Lightning Flash Tom and yes for sure i'll try with my tripod too. Here in Italy now it's summer and i'm making a raining dance to have a chance and try to keep the flashes in the storm.I hope to do my best above all in the night with a long exposure.
