Wallpapers, and not.

Had an idea. Don't pounce on it, chew it to death, and debate it with all the old, run-down arguments of times gone by, if you wouldn't mind.

Separate galleries, nay, separate "sub-sites". Think about it.

A long-drawn out-debate has gone on over what is, and isn't a wallpaper-worth image. Certainly, with the exception of the few creative souls who might've turned their monitors on their sides, everyone has a portrait-oriented monitor.

Here's the deal. I'm a supporter, proponent, whatever you want to call it, of stringent image standards. Composition, creativity, technical aspects, etc all being top-notch. In a lot of instances, I'd even like to see them (standards) raised a bit. But honestly, and this argument has been put forth before, a lot of images simply wouldn't be wallpaper material. In some instances, my own work would fit into that category.

Why not then, divide (I can already see Geri rolling his eyes.. sorry, man) the site into wallpaper, and non. NOT snapshot, and non. A lot of ppl have creativity oozing from every pore. And are damn good at what they do. Having said that, a lot of imagery here would be more suited to an art site.

If this turns into a brawl, please.. sink it to the EG. But I'm hoping to put forth a positive suggestion here.

One can always hope...

Well I certainly hope it won't turn into a brawl...no reason it should...seems to me Geri is always looking for good suggestions on how to improve the site and I seem to recall a thread he started asking for ideas...I rather like your idea, Rob...would certainly make it easier to find exactly what you're looking for in a shorter period of time without having to sift through alot that isn't appropriate...as to whether Geri will act on this is another matter...time constraints possibly being one reason he wouldn't...but let's see what others think and I DO hope no silly arguing will take place.

I get what you are saying Rob & I believe it is a good idea. It can be difficult in distinguishing what is desktop worthy & what is not. I do that with my own work ~ if it's on my desktop for less than a day it gets scrapped & if it's on there after a couple days I'll "consider" to post it.

Like Pat said it would definitely make it much easier to sift through the images.

I also would like to see the bar raised up on the "standards". For myself, I have been searching for tutorials & even went to some contest sites to get some ideas for creativity. The images just blew me away ~ even the most simple photographic ones.

Whether your idea will work ~ I can't say, but I would love to see some incentive changes take place. Like you said one can only hope ....

It is - but it's expanded name is "Caedes, the Desktop Wallpaper and Artist Community" 8•D

I'm of 2 minds here - on the one hand, there is a drop-down menu which allows images to be sorted by wallpaper "shape". Also, different people consider different things "wallpaper worthy"

On the other hand, there is certainly a lot of art which is not necessarily "wallpaper worthy" but are still great images in and of themselves. I think I would support that kind of division - and allow users to choose which they upload to. What I'd like to see as part of that is find some way to make the division inclusive if possible. Anyone have any suggestions on how to do that?

"Caedes is a close community of artists, designers, and photographers who share their work through the medium of computer desktop wallpaper."
:) :)

in theory the permanent galleries is the place to find top quality wallpaper but I agree that there are many other top notch/interesting/experimental images of great artistic value that do not make it and therefore do not get the exposure they deserve.
I believe though that once members/visitors become familiar with the site they do explore further and this is proved by the occassional delightful messages received commenting on an archived, often forgotten image which someone somwhere has decided suits their desktop, proving that "different people consider different things 'wallpaper worthy'" is very true.
Sometimes my own images I 'test drive' on this home computer monitor before deciding to upload are met with groans at home of "oh no it another. . . ." Likewise images I choose from here often invoke the same reponse - its all a matter of personal preference. And that as well, can change from day to day.

There are probably others like me who already find it difficult to decide which category some images belong in - e.g. macro/ flower/ nature or landscape/water/mountains, then deciding whether any manipulation makes it belong in the maniplation category. Often as far as photography goes 'general' is a safe bet :)Giving users another option to opt out of having images considered for wallpaper selection (permanent galls)could be a good idea but in the end they would still be there and people would still use them as w/p if they so chose.
Rob -you said "Separate galleries, nay, separate "sub-sites". Think about it."
I'm thinking! :)

I would imagine that there would be "showcase" galleries for both types of images. 8•)

I'd certainly hope so. something similar to the permanent galleries now in place, ideally.

The real problem is that there is no definitive definition of qualification for "desktop wallpaper". It used to be that most screens were 3:4 ratio or so, but now there are many different screen ratios and sizes (phones, tablets, etc). Rather than separate them myself I'd prefer the user to do it with the "screen size/ratio" drop-down box that was mentioned above.

I think that was you (Rob) are actually wanting is a separation between the content that authors intend as "serious Art" and what they intend for a more lighthearted desktop wallpaper usage scenario. This is not to say that such a distinction is easy to make (or possible/preferable).

Actually, Geri, what inspired that, in part, was a few different members saying "that's very (nice, interesting, etc), but I don't think I'd put it on my screen".

Still, I was trying to make things easier, not add to the confusion. Oh well.

I do understand that art is very subjective, and perhaps, the distinction of wallpaper from art is as well.

So dose this mean my "stuff" goes away? I do'nt think I'm considered wallpaper. Some say I'm not art.

Goes away? Most certainly not, or so I'd hope. How is your work not art? It might (or might not) be be art that some people appreciate, but that's just a matter of taste. Anyway, from Geri's response, doesn't look like this particular idea will make it off the ground.
