*hijacks the thread*

And you can test out my text editor as well :D

Direct download

and it doesn't need an install :P

*tests Tim's text editor*

Hmm ... Fairly simple, easy to use, love the use of tabs for extra edit controls and the like but the only problem is this, the file size seems to be too large for what it does :\

Other than that, it's nice :D

Not really, I'm just ahead of the game ;øP

It's part of an upcoming standard, and all browsers except IE support it.

"Its part of an upcoming standard, and all browsers except IE support it."

All browsers, Tim? Have to be careful when employing that word. Since you just stated that IE does not support it.

And what exactly does "Its" (<--- your grammatical and Freudian slip is showing with your lack of punctuation here:oP) and "it" refer to?

Methinks Tim is making "it" up. :oP

You could have simply said, 'thank you Dave ... it was an honor for me for you to have taken the time to fulfill my request'.

But ... no ... you didn't. :o\

And for that ... you must pay ... and pay ... and ...

Some cookies now, will end your pain. >:oD

I stated it that way because IE doesn't deserve to be called a web browser.

It is consistently the most difficult to design for, because of the lack of respect for standards.

"It" is CSS 3.

This has nothing to do with this thread!

Marginalising a product or user base will always damage your products potential - there isn’t much room for personal likes and dislikes in a competitive market. Universally usable and open cross platform applications always tend to be the most popular IMHO.

Yeah!! /\ What he said!! /\

Just kidding a bit, Tim ... don't get your ... er, browsers in a knot. :oP

Interesting though Phil, how some companies still ignore that simple rule of commerce. Ie., Sony is notorious.

And recently and topically ... Nikon with their proprietary Capture NX software.

And yes, I have heard/read the arguments of reverse engineering protection et al. However, what with patents no longer affording manufacturers the safe havens they once did from competitive eyes and corporate espionage ... the argument for such is weak in my mind.

Ok, I didn't ... but, I hesitate in going e-toe-to-e-toe with Phil on any argument and wish to leave myself an out. ;o)

No you are right - there are many companies that ignore consumer’s requirements to suit their own needs - your examples being good ones. Sony as you said are big culprits – and often fall on their arse because of it, a prime example being their walkmans – often launched as iPod killers but refusing to release software to use them on Macs. Oddly enough they barely even managed to scratch the surface of Apple’s market share with that little ploy.

as of last month IE still had a 53% market share in users - it would be churlish to ignore such a large segment of potential users really.

Was curious and came across these stats:

"Below are the statistics for March 2008 as provided by Net Applications":

TOP BROWSER MARKET SHARE FOR MARCH 2008
(Expressed in Percentages)

Browsers...............March......February......Difference
Internet Explorer......74.73.......74.88...........0.15
Firefox....................17.87.......17.27...........0.60
Safari.....................05.86.......05.70...........0.16
Opera......................0.69.........0.69...........0.00
Netscape.................0.55.........0.68...........0.13
Others.....................0.30.........0.78...........0.48
Total....................100.00......100.00...........0

What was your source Phil? Seeing that number of "53%" was a tad shocking, tell the truth. As it suggests and suggested a much bigger decline than I was aware of, and not ... that that is a bad thing either. I like the idea of the pressure that is brought to bear on the developers to be more responsive in all areas relating to their browser product. Security, add-ons, features and so forth.

id have to find it again but I think it was a governmental body of some sort - i could be mistaken but the 53% may apply just to IE7 whereas the 74% covers all variants of IE.

Not allowing IE is not as much of a hinderance as one might think.

Most users of IE don't know enough about technology to find my website interesting in the first place.

I know that's a gross generalization, but it holds true for the most part.

Guarantee me that it will completely uninstall itself for one (no remnants whatsoever left in the reg, tyvm) ... and two, that it will not cause ANY harm to my rig ...

And while you are this particular, and in my mind, necessary task towards the ends of self-promotion and debugging efforts on your part ... you haven't explained much to, you know, us technologically challenged people that use IE.

What's a "program"? Is it anything like a game. I likes games. :oP

Okay, I personally guarantee that no harm will be done to your computer, and that it is 100% removable.

This program allows a person to edit plain-text files or files that are text-based, such as Html, CSS, batch files, ini scripts, et cetera.

Keep in mind it is still in its early stages. I am hard at work on a more advanced version.

:oD

Some Help files would be nice.

And why is the size rather on the weighty side of things?

That aside ... not sure what else to tell you beyond what Dave reported in his post. Uhm, let us know when you have the advanced version then?

And out of curiosity ... how long did this venture take?

I'm right in the middle of the advanced version. I don't really have a release schedule because the amount of time I have to work on it varies greatly, and I don't have a very good sense of estimation. ;øP

The reason the program is a little on the heavy side is because I'm using the wxWidgets framework, and I didn't want any external dll dependancies.

So far this venture has been about two months in the making.
