I know everyone likes different things, so I accepted it at first when my uploads didn't get many comments, but after a while I'm really starting to believe that the number of comments and the c-index is based mostly if not solely on the popularity of the person who posted them, not the artistic value. I love art; painting, drawing, and photography, that's why I joined Caedes. But now every time a more well-known member uploads a new image and they receive hundreds of comments, while the picture I uploaded weeks ago has only 1 or 2, I just have to roll my eyes. So terribly overrated.

A few years ago, Caedes changed the voting system to avoid c-index cheatings. The Voting Booth is organised for anonymous votes.
There are no perfect systems, but I think "this is the least bad".

It's logical that people are going to look out for new posts by their friends and leave comments on them. I don't think this necessarily means they are then less inclined to comment on other images though. If you do want more comments on your images, the best way is probably to comment on works by others.

The other thing to consider is that comments left by friends do not necessarily give critical feedback. Much of the time they are just saying hello, or "Nice work", etc. Personally I don't really think you are missing out on a lot, but that's only my opinion.

(sorry, didn't mean to post the above)

true, true. But i still think that several very good images on here (not just mine) haven't received enough recognition, which is why I do comment on others' work, regardless to whether I know the person or not. I guess I just wish more people would do the same.

Thanks Pierre, and Sam.

There has been considerable discussion regarding 'friends' voting highly on images of people they know.
I do not believe this has any great impact on the final c-index score considering the images voted on are randomly selected. I rarely recognise an image of a 'friend' and if I do it has no influence on the score I give.
Raquel, I guess you just have to decide what is most important to you - the c-index score or comments received. The c-index in theory should be a good indication of the image's popularity, while comments are either made because your image has stood out amongst the rest or because you have a large list of friends who have the habit of commenting on your images.
Most of us add friends to our list because we enjoy the style/genre they produce.
I know there are many members who deliberately view the new images and comment first on those that impress them before moving on to friends lists, so (again in theory) all images have the oportunity to be recognised and appreciated.
Perhaps you are confusing the 'popularity of the person' with the popularity of the image or the type of image.Very often the size of the image is a contributing factor to its score - people like wallpaper sized images.

Raquel, I looked quickly through your gallery, and I'm going to make an observation about why you may not be receiving a lot of comments. I've been a member here on Caedes.net for about four years now (My God - has it been that long?), and I've felt that same feeling, and I've done a few experiments on the members here. I've have learned a couple things about what sells. This is a desktop wallpaper site. I know we all push non-wallpaper art, but it's primarily a wallpaper site.

Your work, while lovely art in its own right is not necessarily targeted at the wallpaper community. Another thing I've learned: bright high-intensity colors sell, specially reds, greens, and oranges. If you spend ten seconds per page looking at the "New Images" gallery as most people do, you will notice the sunsets and the bright green/blue landscapes first, then the red earth scenes and flowers - when they're against contrasting backgrounds. Way down the list are pastels and black and white. Your gallery is full of lovely hand-drawn pastels and black and white images. They do not stand out in a gallery, because of the palette you chose. If someone were in a coffee shop, and there on the wall by itself was one of your prints they might think it was lovely, but when it's surrounded by squirrel photos, sunsets, forested beaches, and vibrant flowers, your images will not be as quickly noticed. My black and whites have suffered the same fate.

What it took me a long painful time to learn is the idea that I produce my art to express something intangible and inarticulable in me. I produce it to communicate that intangible to people who are able to feel it too. The rest of the people have their own muses and march to their own drums. I will never be an Ansel Adams appealing to a wide range of people. That's OK with me.

Raquel - I have used your 'sunny flowers' as a desktop - against a deep purple/blue backgroung and it looks very good. It is a delightful creation.
If you have an editing programe why not consider bordering images in similar sizes to bring them to desktop size? I think that would increase their popularity and appreciation.
If you do not already have a photo editor you may like PhotoFiltre. Version 6 is free and you can download it here

I sure don't ever see that with my works...If anything, I get high ratings/hits/d'loads (and rips) on what I feel...are some of the dumbest compositions I ever posted! (LOL)

I know what you mean about the strange responses I get from my stuff. It seems like the really good stuff gets ignored while the stuff I feel to be less interesting or hackneyed gets rave reviews and high traffic volumes. Don't let it stop you from producing what you like.

i feel the same way.. im a semi-pro photographer and the stuff i post here is not my best work.. my best work belongs to other people.. but the stuf i feel is my best gets low ratings every time. the stuff i dont expect to be popular people love. what gives? its ok tho.. the main reason i post is to share some of the beauty of hawaii with peopl that might like it.. not everyone can live in hawaii. it is frustrating tho.. seeing really bland crap shots getting rave reviews cuz its someone that spends their whole life on this site. and some of my pics that i could sell but choose to give them away instead gets ignored. oh well... as long as a few people appreciate them itsokay by me.
