What's Up With The Self-Portraits?

Look I understand why we upload self portraits. First it's nice to put a face to the work, and second usually one's self is the only model we have regular access to. So I understand and appreciate when folks upload a self-portrait.

One.

Maybe two.

After that it starts to be narcissistic. I wonder if these repeat self-portrait uploaders realize how egotistic it makes them look. Come on folks. Get over yourselves.

Hey Regmar,
A portrait is a portrait, a style of photography, even if it is a self-portrait,
So why upload more than 2 images to any gallery?,

I understand there are some cases (perhaps most here in the Self Portraits gallery) where the case is exactly what you state,
On the other hand, there are some cases where the repeated uploads can be creative, different, a worthy portrait, an interesting capture,
Even if it is the same person,
I think if one is serious about self-portraiture, it might not be that annoying,

Kind regards
Tim

I think Reg was referring to the snappy 'CaedesBook' style of image as opposed to any serious attempt at creative portraiture.

Exactly,...
I agree on the snappy ones,
Just not all self portraits,
There might be other reasons to appreciate,(~8

I suppose it's possible to generate more than a couple of images of yourself that show completely different aspects, but let's face it: we really haven't seen too many of these. Why not use different subjects? Maybe they aren't as fetching as we feel we are? Now I haven't seen everything, but as a moderator I pore over people's galleries *a lot*, and I really haven't yet seen anyone who managed to make multiple photos of themselves and actually succeeded in doing what you're suggesting. While I would welcome it if someone really did it, I have yet to witness it.

This is one of those situations like the "Rules of Composition". While there are times when one should stray beyond the borders of these rules, the artist had better be damned good or the adventure is doomed. Not many of us here are that good, and for an artist to think (s)he is that good is a bit egotistic and unlikely - specially if the artist isn't one of the giants who have years of accomplishment under their belts. Unfortunately all the artists I've seem uploading self-portraits fall into, what Phil appropriately calls, "CaedesBook" style.
