Top 100 Iconic photo locations of the world brought to you by "Outdoorphotographer".

Besides tips, advice and some gorgeous galleries by photographer, "Outdoorphotographer" has assembled a map and associated images from the 'Top 100 locations' around the world in conjunction with Microsoft's Virtual Earth free software.

The world map is divided into differing quadrants. For example; "United states & North America":

Northeastern Quadrant
Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont

Northwestern Quadrant
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming

And so on.

Then, "International", which is furthered sectioned into Africa, Europe, South America and more.

Check out where you live and see how your photos compare to the areas noted. And come away ... inspired. :o)

And there's a contest running till August 15th, 2008 as well, with a Canon 5D D-SLR Camera up for grabs (quite a spectacular prize package, found here). Open to residents of the 50 United States only, unfortunately.

Note: The contest is sponsored in part by Microsoft's Virtual Earth. And I quote;

"Windows Live Search
Live Search Maps is a free global mapping and search service. You can search for landmarks in specific locations, see bird's-eye views of many major cities and explore your world in new ways. You can view three-dimensional maps. You can also create and publish 3D models for other Live Maps view to see by using Virtual Earth - 3DVIA (Beta)."

It is impressive eye candy, a free download is required to make use of the 3D viewing. Have a look see.

Welllll, those are 'nice' spots Ian ... you know, for you. :oP

I just took a closer look myself, and perhaps understandably ... or not ... being a U.S. based publication, the results are somewhat ... somewhat, skewed. ;o)

Suddenly the "C" thingy doesn't look quite as bad now, does it?

:oD

(/\ It's a joke, it's a joke. :o) ... heyyyy, I heard that >:o| ... :oD)

As for allll of Europe, if I understand this correctly ... there are only a modicum of locations represented. However, searching through the "Galleries" is quite a different matter.

Yeah not a single location in Australia either. I thought Ayers Rock or the Bungle Bungles might have gotten a mention... and what of the great barrier reef? *shrugs*

Ahh..the good ole' US country bias...don't you know that the US is better than all those other places? Pffft...they shouldn't even be named on the map!

(For those of you who can't read the sarcasm in the above, PLEASE be assured I am not serious! :))

Ah, and Les..my dreams of becoming a monster behind a good lens are so vivid I can taste them..
Err..what does a good lens taste like, you ask?!! Freakin' delicious! *drools over the pricey shiny lovely oh so wonderful camera equimpment*

I've been to this site several times now & keep forgetting to comment. Lots of info, tips, great articles, & impressive galleries. Enjoyed taking the tour cross country using the Virtual Earth Map. Couldn't resist zooming in on my location & also discovered some photo op's less than 20 miles from me (duh), though the better one's are 8 - 10 hours north of me.

Short road trip? ... long road trip? ... decisions ... decisions.

The grand prize package for the contest is quite impressive. Glancing at the rules there is a limit of three enteries per person. Just browsing through the contest gallery, I would say it would be difficult to choose a winner. They are all very good.

Les, thank you for sharing. I will be back there to visit ... for sure. ;-)

TIPS

• Double-clicking on a region will make the map zoom in to the location.
• Use the click wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out of the Virtual Earth map.
• Click on the directions of the compass to move north, south, east or west.
• The Road View shows you local streets and highways.
• The Aerial View shows you a view of the location from above.
• The Hybrid View combines the Road and Aerial views to show you a location from above with markings that signify the local roads and highways.
• The 3D View takes you on a virtual journey across the planet. To get started, download the full version of Microsoft Virtual Earth.
• Type in the GPS coordinates of any location in the fields below the map (try one of the locations featured in this month’s Outdoor Photographer ). Click “Go” and you’ll be taken directly to the location on the map.
• Want to learn more about a particular location? Click on the magnifying-glass icon next to the name of any location, and you’ll automatically be taken to a Windows Live Search query.
• The star icon signifies a pick from one of our staff members. Either one of our team members has been there, or we just really like the place. Plus, it’s guaranteed to be a great photo location!

OK, So is this where I start making promises I can't keep and kissing babies in order to get everybody to vote for my entries? There's no way I'm going to give Keifer a kiss! I don't need to win the People's Choice Award that bad.
