can anyone direct me to a web site where i can understand the workings of creating fractal images. they intrigue me but i do not know where to start to create them...

fractals are created by using math. However, there are generators that do the math for us! There are several good ones out there and some that are free-ware. I use KPT 5 with Photoshop. This is not free-ware but a very good program if you have the money. Ultra Fractal is also a good generator. You should be able to do a seach for fractal generators and be easily directed that way. However, if someone else does not reply to this thread before I get home I will post a page that was given to me with SEVERAL generators. ; )

If you're looking for a cool fractal I suggest:

a+b*i = (a+b*i)^2+(x+y*i)
or
x = x^2 + c
