I have a Rebel XTI, and am completly new to the photography world. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good lens? I am looking for a good zoom lens, but have no idea where to start. Thanks for all the help!!

Canon 70mm-200mm f/4 "L" series lens. Costs about $600. But check out my gallery and you will see it works very well as a macro also. It is the only lens I use. Good choice on th Rebel XTi. I also had one until I upgraded to the 40D. Hope this helps...Gregg

I'd agree that the 70-200m f/4 is a great lens (not saying I own one). But, see how the background mushes in eggray's photos?

50mm 1.8 or 1.4 are both background-blurring, sharp, small, cheap lenses.

The 28-135 IS is a good walk-around, you can find it for reasonable prices online or craigslist too. The 1.8 50mm is a steal for the price though. It does depend on how much you want to spend too. Do you already have the kit lens?

I have two zoom lenses: one is a Canon 24-105L, the other is a Sigma DG 18-200. The first is considered a good lens, the second a modest one. But I am using the Sigma a lot, and I am having a lot of fun with it. Pros: not much heavier nor bigger than the kit lens you probably got with your camera, a fantastic zoom range. Great for travelling. Cons: the quality is not better than the kit lens. But if you are new to the photography world, the quality of the lens will probably not be the limitation at the beginning. It was not for me when I started at least. If I were you, I would go for one of the cheaper zoom lenses and spend what you can save in knowledge (courses, workshops, books).

You can't go wrong with the Canon 10-400L lens. It's the only lens I own, so it never comes off my camera. It's a $1400 lens and worth every penny.

10-400 better be a typo. I'm going to guess 100-400? I can't see a 10-400 being any good.

Good catch, Milo. But, wouldn't it be cool if there was a 10-400 lens?

it would be if it was good quality:P. I don't imagine we will be seeing one of those all that soon. The 18-200 lenses that are out are decent, but they definitely have their problems. 10-400 would be much worse.

Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.

Canon has an L series that is 28-300, a very nice focal range. You'd better have the $2300+ to buy it though. It is an L lens though and has IS and a wide aperture, so if you needed that I guess its worth it!

I bought a repackaged kit from Digicombos.

It came with 2 Tamron's 18-75 and 80-300.
That covers a pretty wide range of shots and I've been happy with the quality. Much less than $2300 but not IS.
