The New Apophysis Released Today, 8/7/08 !!!!

Hello fellow Apophysis-ians !!! Or whatever. ;oD

Just to let you all know, I hear the next release of Apophysis, Apophysis 2.08, will be out on August 8th. Which means that your current Apophysis, 2.07 will time out then. Why they do this I don't know, personally I find it extremely irritating that they can't come up with another stable Apophysis like 2.02 but that's just me I guess.

Anyway, one of the things I've heard is that supposedly they've managed to fix the plug-in folder limitation.... in other words apparently you'll be able to store more than 27 plug-ins.

So, we'll see. To date I haven't heard anything about the 2.06 hack, but since it was developed apart from the regular Apophysis I'm assuming there won't be a problem with it.

And, as always, you should be able to get the new Apo at Sourceforge.net. You'll be able to get the link at any of the fractal clubs over at deviantART, plus I'll post it here.

*EDIT*

I was just in the Aposhack Chat a little bit ago where it was stated that according to Zeuek, there is supposedly a new version of the Apophysis 3D Hack to be released too.

So, since I never quite got the hang of the first, which was completely my own fault, this new one should be interesting.

Just a heads up.

Thanks Lauren. :o)

I am curious as to whether things will be more speedier with this newer version.

Not sure if my complaints should be relegated to the Quick Install, the plug-ins snafu or not. However, it did appear that preview renders took much more time.

Here's the link to the Apophysis page at sourceforge.net.

Thanks, that sounds interesting; I'm particularly happy with the plug-ins change. Though my little old PC is barely able to render anything as it has so little memory... I wonder if the new version will be even harder (or not so bad). ;-)

Hmm... Has anyone had any problems with running 2.08? I am getting an access violation error. Downloaded the program twice to make sure the first one was not just a corrupt download.

edit: Ok, I moved some plug-ins out of the plug-ins folder and it seems to open now without the errors. I just have to figure out which plug-in is incompatible with it now.

i haven't downloaded it yet myself, but there's lots of chatter about it on the Apo mailing list. One of the things being suggested is you should remove 2.07 from the installation folder as this seem to be causing some conflict.... something about them not playing well together.

And apparently some of the plug-ins are conflicting too.

I was going to pour all my plug-ins into the folder last night, but was too lazy... and I'm glad now! Maybe I'll do that gradually. My 2.07 is still in the same folder and there have been no problems yet, but I only used Apo 2.08 for one night. I'll take 2.07 out... thanks for the tips. ;-)

Thanks Lauren and Tootles. I too have deleted 2.07 from the Apo directory, since it is expired now. I found a comment in Zueck's dA journal that there are several plug-ins that have compatibility issues with the new version.

Here is a copy of Keeps' comment on dA:

"There are more than one. At this time though, a for-sure many have found is avMobius by *slobo777 However most of =cothe's are also not operable too. Some people have had a problem with boarders too.

The bigger issue is how the plugin was made, the ones using the Fabers means of making them seem to work the best.

Several of us have discovered as well that 76 is the most plug-ins you can have past which Apo seems to lock up. To recover from that lockup you have to open Apo, open the Options panel, Clear and then select linear, click OK, click OK on the error panel, close Apo then re-open it.

Also, the random batch goes wonky after 24 plug ins, and the variations tab in the options panel seems to go blank after 30 plug ins.

With the new XAOS option too, settings that are too high (for me 1000 did it) result in a "stack overflow" error.

Oh and closing one apo while another is open from the same directory can delete the flame.rand file and that will also crash Apo.

That is about it at the moment. OMG if you have not yet, right click on the XAOS section OMG it is awesome!"

Thanks Lori, that's interesting! :-) I'll leave boarders out meantime. My variations tab seems to reset itself (always has), but maybe there's something I'm missing. Perhaps it's affected by the presence of the 3D hack.

It's not a big problem thus far.

I noticed something... on the first night I had Apo 2.08, I didn't remove 2.07 from the folder, and was able to run certain scripts (not 3D) by Cabin Tom. They were scripts I had been running on 2.07 beta.

The next night I got rid of 2.07 and then found those particular scripts didn't work in 2.08 any more. If I switched to a different folder of scripts, (the 3D? Now I'm getting confused!), those worked in their stead. Though certain 3D scripts don't (such as Bubbles 3D).

Maybe others know why this happens but I'm still figuring things out. :-)

PS: the Xaos option? Where can I find that?

Ok, now having added some more variation plugins ... encountering some boot problems with the 3D hack version. So, it would appear that some of the variations do not indeed play well with others.

Shall endeavour to come up with a list of variations which might be causing some problems.

As noted above by Lori, thus far;

"There are more than one. At this time though, a for-sure many have found is avMobius by *slobo777 However most of =cothe's are also not operable too. Some people have had a problem with boarders too."

The ones that I have found that are non-compatible is that of the avMobius, as mentioned by Les above. As well the ones that start with Z-. Strangely, the boarders has not given me a problem.

Also, it would appear that the maximum number of plugins that can be checked in options, is 64. I have gone in and unchecked some and checked others, but it always picks the first 64 plugs and un-checks any of the excess ones after reopening options again.

For those that are using the AQI, I have received an e-mail that WarDog is creating a new one, with the addition of 2.08 and deletion of 2.07. No word on whether or not a new GPPS is in the works at this time.

All I can add to this so far is that I made the same experiment as Lori a few days ago. :-) I deselected one of the first 64 variations and in its stead I checked one variation from number 65 onwards. Unfortunately, when I reopened the variations tab, the later variation I had selected had been quietly deselected again...

Also it seems to me that if I used the 'set all' button to check all the boxes, closed the variations window, and then opened it again, all the boxes had been unchecked again... not a single one was checked.

This time I checked them one by one without using the 'set all' button, and they seemed to stick (the first 64). Fingers crossed...

For anyone interested, a new version of the Apophysis Quick Installer (AQI) is available for download here . It includes the new 2.08beta, minus the 2.07 version. A new GPPS installer is not available at the time of this writing. The forum requires a free register to obtain the AQI download.

I have not downloaded it yet, as I'm not certain it will remedy the current issues that I am having with the variations tab in options or not. But for anyone that does download it, please come back and report your experience with it.

Tootles - I think I have discovered a work-around to the resetting variations window. With first run of Apo, go in the variations tab and select the ones you want, or select "set all", and click "ok". After running a random batch of flames, go in and make sure the plugins are checked. But anytime you open the variations tab, be sure to click "ok", even if no changes are made, and they will not get unchecked after closing the window. So far, this has worked for me. As for selecting any plugins from 65 onwards, I have yet to figure this one out.

I wrote to WarDog at the Apophysis Quick Installer website, to inquire about what has changed with the new AQI installer, and if he expects to release a new GPPS installer in the near future. I also shared with him the issues a number of us have come across with the variations tab in the options window. Here is the reply I received:

"Hi Lori,

In order for Apophysis to read the plugins in the plugin folder you need to make sure 2.08 is installed in C:\Program Files\Apophysis AQI\2.0.7 folder and create a shortcut to your desktop. Only thing that the new AQI does is renames the 207 folder to 208, deletes Apophysis 207 and adds 208 with a shortcut on your desktop.

The GPPS is included in the AQI zip file when you download it. All the GPPS install does is make sure all scripts, plugins etc are put in there correct folders.

I have been told by others that Apophysis 208 unlimited plugin fix does not work. I do not recommend to add anymore plugins to the 208 plugin folder than what is already in there. Just add and remove a few at a time when you need to change things around. I will not add all the plugins in the GPPS installer to be installed to the 2.08 plugin folder until this bug is fixed by the Apophysis beta tram writers.

Thanks for your support of AQI and passing the word around. :)

WD"

I don't have any information on the plugin fix that WarDog refers to, but I hope this info is helpful to those having problems.

I downloaded & installed the AQI /w 2.08 beta. Everything appears to be working fine. The only thing that remains unchanged is the variations as mentioned by Lori & Tootles. I have the max number of plugins at 76, but after opening Apophysis & then going to Options ---> Variations, the first 64 are checked. I then either click select all or deselect all & check the variations I want.

I haven't tried all the plugins yet, but I do know (as Lori mentioned) ... avMobius is incompatible & I kept getting error messages. Apo eventually opened up & worked as it normally does.

I haven't had a chance to try out the 3D version yet.

btw, I did have 77 plugins loaded in Apo (I miscounted) & had no problems with it locking up. I did eventually reduce it to 76.

Thanks Lori, I gave that a try, and it works during that session. I'm used to thinking that a setting will stay as it is if you cancel or shut the window without changing anything, but seems as though that's not the case with the variations?

I was finding that even if the variations in the options tab were selected when I closed Apo, the next time I started it up, the first random batch was very plain and all the variations were deselected.

Having used the AQI, though that appears to have been fixed, and there are some plugins and scripts I didn't have before, such as the notorious avMobius. :-) I feel all set now -- thanks for the link.

I tried out the 3D Hack (AQI) ... the program appears to be working fine. There is still the issue with the Options/Variations.

When I opened up 2.08beta today none of the variations were checked in Options/Variations, so I had to select them myself. Yesterday the first 64 were checked automatically .... Hmmmmmmmm. If I create a new random branch & then go back into Options/Variations only the first 64 are checked.

I may switch out some of the plugins to see what happens.

Hopefully the plugin issue will be resolved soon.

Hi Danika, it's a confusing situtation with the variations, I never know what to expect. :-)

I'm happy I downloaded and installed the AQI, though one glitch I came across is that it changed a setting I wasn't expecting. I prefer to render my flames with a transparent background, but though it seemed to be set for that, my flames were being rendered with a solid background.

After a little thought, I realized that you can only get the transparent backgrounds in PNGs (not JPEGs), and in fact the flames were being rendered as JPEGs instead of PNGs (aaaaargh).

I think just telling it you want your current flame rendered as a PNG sorts it out (provided it has PNG transparency enabled in the Options window); it remembers that for all your other flames.

I hope.

Hi Paul, I have rendered a few flames in transparency. I should mention that this is not ideal for all flames, it just depends on the flame. I did my post work in a photo editing program. PaintShopPro and Photoshop are good choices. However, if you don't have either of those, a good free alternative is The Gimp.

Once you open up the rendered flame in your choice of editor, you can create a separate layer for your background, and fill it with your choice of color. Then you can enhance the original flame by first duplicating it several times, and then merging the flame layers without flattening them. Then you can play with contrast, saturation and color adjustments. When you are satisfied with the adjustments made, just flatten the layers.

Link to The Gimp

Link to another free editor Photofiltre , however it does not have the capability for layers.

If you would like further instructions, I have a few saved tutorials that I could send you. Just drop me a PM.

Ohh..and welcome to Caedes and to the world of Apo :)

Hi Paul.. I always render in PNG Transparent.. what I do I use Infraview I have it set so when I open a PNG transparent fractal it automatically goes onto a black background, I then click SaveAs change the name by adding black to the end of the name so i keep the transparent and have a black one..

Infraview is freeware, Photofiltre is free too and a great program..
