I thought it was a pleasant surprise to see that movies could still be made with out: in your face nudity, vulgarity and up front blood and gore. The B&W DIG effects along with the sepia and art Nuevo type imagery was refreshing. The use of shadows over light was out standing. It reminded me of the earlier black and white colorization attempts during the early twenties and thirties movies. Sort of an Orson Wells meets; Buck Rogers meets the thin man type adventure. The old style mindless evil foe was refreshing along with the old sci-fi style robots. The old ray gun effects where outstanding. It was nice for a change to go to a movie that left me with a feeling of being entertained along with a good feeling, instead of the disgusting type of movie that leaves you trying to recover from the blood and gore that I had just seen. All in all a great movie and worth seeing!
You bring up Orson Wells and the Thin Man and you've got my attention. I havn't heard anything but from the shots I've seen I really like the style of it, colors, camerawork. I've got a walk in closet full of movies from the silents (over a hundred) up to the present (very few) They just don't make much that sticks with you recently, clean is a rarity, much less leaves you enthused enough to jump on line. I may have to drag myself to a theater sticky floors and all to see something like this.
I'm interested in seeing this movie - just for the CGI....and Angelina. And that character that is the dark woman. I looked at the website and was impressed with most everything...even if it's not getting grand reviews. The fact that the backgrounds were completly CGI grabbed me and I HAVE to go see it for that.
Tracy I think this will be one of those sleeper movie that willget under rated do to the lack of volgarity and lackof sexual content. I think it is just one of the best all around movies of the year.
on a visual aspect it's breathtaking but apart from that i found it a bit vacuous but i see your point about it being inoffensive family fun. I saw Hero at around the same time and preferred that more on just about every level.
I glad we agree on some points Phil. I really that it was meant to be some what vacuous. The over acting and the corn ball pretences where there for the overal effect of an old movie.
I just saw it today and really liked it. The plot needed some work, but I thought the concept was great. The animation was really good, and I agree that it was mice to see a movie without being disgusted.
I just saw the movie Friday and I enjoyed it :) I do agree with the lack of plot depth and overacting, but I think that it was a bit purposeful. If you look at the old comics and serial movies they were very much this way. Overall I think it was a fun movie and the CGI was a work of art in itself!
I liked the movie, but I hated the last line. And also the robots were a little hokey (at least the big ones were.).
As for the movie itself, it was good. The style they used was definetely relevant to works in the 30's and 40's. Quite unique in this day and age.
The only other thing that bothered me was how they made Angelina Jolie into this "main character" when actually Giovanni Ribisi (whom I enjoy more) doesn't get his name in the title. And he had a bigger part. *sigh* The things people will do to get sales up.
