Does this really seem fair?

I actually decided to respond to a "request for comment" (I tend to ignore them, for reasons like this) and wrote a constructive, but unfortunately not very favorable, critique.

The poster decides to retaliate by posting a copy/paste job of my crit, with maybe 5 or 6 words changed, on a post of mine. Ugly enough, but it was an image dedicated to someone else.

Safe to say that just because someone is an adult, they can't be trusted to actually act like one.

Note the time stamps on each:

My image

The image I critiqued

I know this might not seem like a big deal to some, but I know I'm not the only one that this has happened to. And yes, a screen shot was taken, in the event of any sneaky post-edits.

Fair? Absolutely not! Rob, you gave an honest critique & if the person didn't agree with it, then a simple PM to you was all that was needed. The copy & paste ... I find totally unacceptable. I'm as upset as you are. Personally I have not had this happen to me, but I have seen it happen to others as well.

Thank you for bringing attention to this matter.

Previous experience tells me that it'll be largely ignored, and dismissed as a squabble between members. I just felt it needed to be exposed.

Rob - Thank you for bringing this to the attention of interested readers. I firmly believe that by doing so, you have caused this individual to be more creative in future quests to get even. I also believe that posting this type of behavior will pressure this individual and others to grow-up and shape-up when they feel challanged. There I said it and I feel better now. I Salute you my friend! a round of Hip Hip Hoorays for you!

Now ... what'd did YOU do Rob??

Just kidding.

Unfortunate behaviour. Most unfortunate.

Not trying to minimize or diminish feelings or thoughts that have been expressed. Not my intent at all, rest assured. Or, I would hope that would be the perception of my being here on this discussion thread.

While the actions of this member could be construed as childish ... or is childish behaviour ... or something else ...

*dons semi-official hat and guise of devil's advocate*

... what would 'you' (<-- speaking generally here and putting this question out there for anyone that would like to respond) propose as 'punishment'?

And I am being serious here.

Is this just an annoyance? Or, is this truly egregious behaviour?

And I pose the above questions because not every member populates or frequents the discussion forums. Don't really have any hard numbers, but I would hazard a guess that their reach is not 100% ... or close to that number. So ...

Is exposure here sufficient?

Or? ...

Well, I'd start by having the comment shamed. Then, I'd ask that someone in a Moderator's capacity address the member directly, and tell them not to do it again. I've complained in the past, about some other issue. And it went largly, and officially, ignored.

*shrug*

From the copy & pasted version (because I cant see their image now) there was nothing wrong with what you wrote.. it gave helpful critique on how to improve, it's people like those that stop members from giving an honest comment.. waste of time asking for official help to address that particular member, you'll probably only get told to play nice.. lol

I was thinking recently how, even when we mean kindly, our comments and tone are misunderstood. A lot of people find that (even when they wish otherwise, and feel like a kid using them), that emoticons help a lot when it comes to internet communications (possible suggestion to the Caedes site... the ability to use emoticons?)

I've made mistakes in the past myself and have come across the wrong way, but I would never put 'nice try' in any of my comments to anyone. It was probably meant kindly; possibly differences in culture come into play here, I don't know. To me it sounds dismissive. I searched in Google for the phrase, and all the top results there were sarcastic.

I felt since the topic was being discussed, it was a point worth making... not wanting to upset or judge anyone here. (Searches fruitlessly for the emoticon for a grovelling grin).

My suggestion to all members here:

Instead of continually bashing the +mods and the job that they don't do, in your opinion, what not try PM'ing the ones that are active and ask them nicely to address your concern @ the moment?
In addition, if less snapshots, cutsie pet uploads, direct CoC violations, rips and nudity along with shouting, rude messages to the +mods was dramatically decreased, there would be a lot more time to address your specific issues.

This comes down to moderating yourselves. Seriously.

@Tottles, you are correct, the 'tone' of a message typed can be softened by the right words. We don't need any clutter on the site with emoticons....a "thank your for sharing", "please keep posting", a :=)...all of those work if used frequently. :o)

If you feel a comment is severely wrong, then use the complain button. That is why *caedes has it programmed. Type a polite, signed message. It goes directly to a +mod.

Members who use this site to see if they can 'get one over' on those critical, lazy, *%#* +mods consume many hours of a +mods time on the site & consequently, take time away from others.

Thanks :=)

Hmm..

First, to address Tootles, "nice try" in this instance was a bit of a multi-purpose message. It was a) busted! that's no "waterfall and b)not all that great.. do it over.

I had a bit more to the text than was "recycled" in the "crit" of my image. Was it a favorable critique? No. Was it constructive? I'd stand by it.

Next, to mimi, this isn't an all-out assault on mods, be it Aedilles or Praetors. There is a degree of frustration, though, since there has been past instances where complaints seem to have fallen on deaf ears. The only recourse, as I saw it, was to make the actions of this member known, and perhaps, have their public castigation act as a deterrent against future abuse.

As far as "fair" is concerned, I'm really not sure what that means. I haven't had a lot of experience with fairness in my life. I can see where your original critique could have been phrased less roughly. On the other hand it wasn't a very mature comment to leave on your image.

Just the other day I posted a friendly and humorous comment on someone's image, and someone else went crazy ballistic calling me stupid and a host of other things in a private message (at least it was just a PM!) My first reaction was to respond in kind, but I decided to talk to the original poster about it, and we're OK now. Not sure I WANT to discuss it with the attack dog. I've had worse bruises than that. I'm moving on. Too many flowers still to smell.
