I am going NUTS this morning over stupid popup ads!!!!! When I was using win 98 hardly ever had popups, win XP now and even as i am trying to type I get like 20 in a row!!!! I even have a popup stopper, arrrgggg!!!!
Just needed to let out some frustration here........
Hmm.... it doesn't have to do with the OS I'm thinking, more like which websites you go to. I only get popups from a few websites. Or maybe you have spyware on your computer? To see you should downloaded "Spybot: Search and Destroy", to find it just to go [download.com] this site is run by cnet.
yeah i don't know, my hubby did that already, popups will open when we are not even browsing also, like say as soon as you turn the comp on sometimes they just start popping up. and it doesn't happen all the time either, like right now, just fine, not one. but anyhow, thanks for responding. :)
go to www.cnet.com and download the 'ad-aware' software. run it and it should take care of all the junk on your computer that helps the popups get there. then i downloaded the google toolbar (both for free, by the way) and i get absolutly no pop-ups at all.
hey thanks you guys, i am trying ad-aware right now, i do have a popup stopper, had one called stop-sign or soemhting but it was only a trial, it worked AWESOME, but the trial is over and now it only works every other day. but anyways thanks again guys :-)
ok, well, i tried all that stuff, and i seem to be popup free, (well, almost, but the stopper is doeing it's job. BTW the adaware detected like 514 objects that it called spyware or whatever. thanks ya'll
I've actually found the google toolbar to be pretty useful, it does a really good job of blocking popups, and also gives some immediate search functionality.
Popups don't exist in Linux because Internet Explorer doesn''t exist for Linux. Almost every other browser blocks popup scripts, so you could supposedly get the same perfomance by switching to Mozilla or Opera... :)
xentrick: true, however the person also mentioned adware and spyware. These don't exist on Linux either: partially due to the low number of users, but also due to the different security model on *nix systems.
personally, i found i did not start having any problems with popups or spyware/adware until I got my new comp which happens to windows XP operating system, since then i have had 2 viruses, all this adware/spyware and all the popups. with win 98 for four years i didn't get a single virus and barely any popups. and NO adware/spyware. with win XP it is always something now!
"To the world you are just one person, but to just one person, you could mean the world" or " If you love someone, put their name in a circle, not a heart, because a heart can be broken but a circle can go on forever."
hi guys... i found there are two different kinds of pop-ups. one is from visiting different sites that allow that kind of pop-up advertising. i use 'stopzilla' for that and it works perfectly.
the other kind i've seen actually looks like a pop-up thats sponsored by your system... (it looks more "official") and will pop-up even when your not browsing, especially if you have broadband. these are a blanket type of ad thats sent to lots of ip addresses at once. windows messenger (XP) allows an open pathway for these, so the way to stop them is to edit your messenger settings. i browse all the time, and never get a pop-up.
opera also has a built in pop-up blocker... i used to use it, but a lot of sites don't recognize opera correctly. hope this helps!
I juss got this "popup policeman" and it works great. When i get popups, i juss click on options and cliack enable popup policeman, an it really works, i think i am in love, jk.

synikol, i recently found this out too, plus i found out i had a bunch of adware, it used to be so bad that when i would turn on the comp (we have dsl) i didn't even have to open a brower window and they would just start popping up until there would be like 20 open at once. it was horrible. anyways, i got all the adware off, and my internet provider offers free anti-virus/pop-up software and that seems to have fixed the problem. so i am happy to say i am popup free!! :-)
Yes i use ad-aware and other pop-up stopper programs.. But still, as caedes said- popups dont exist on linux... I use both os's - and in comparison windows looks poor. Go linux! :D
