Doesn't seem 5 minutes since CS3 dropped (maybe that's why Adobe are offering discounted upgrades) - and after a pretty short beta phase - but the full range of CS4 products have hit the shelves at the Photokina show. Supposedly redesigned from the ground up - time will tell....
Unless you are using it for commercial work/output – then the creative suite is definitely a bit of overkill. That said - the new features such as they are appear to be of most help to photographers and 3D artists this time around with non destructive image editing, a nice inpainting background scale function and better masking. Also new is the expanded depth of field tool – I really like this kind of shot and this appears to make it much easier to create them.
I couldn’t see anywhere how long the discounted upgrade program will run for or what the full upgrade price will be when the promotion stops.
upgrading from cs2 photoshop to cs4 will cost you $199 for the regular version or $349 for the extended version. if you qualify for an education purchase the full (extended) product (not upgrade) is $299.
too much overkill then - try PS Elements instead - or just stick with the incumbent CS2 - unless this is the tool that you use to pay your mortgage with - then there's no real need to upgrade :-)
I've done web development professionally and for charity work and so I had to teach myself how to do computer art. When I first started learning HTML in the 90's, all the good free clip art either had a big huge copyright stamp or you had to agree to their terms of service, which usually included linkbacks. Hence why I still have Photoshop. It's not something I'm currently doing for a living, but I can list the skill on my resume. :)
