been looking into filters in my photography class and was wondering if i had the money to only buy one or two which would any of you recommend as you use the most or are the most important?

Well, if you are shooting digital, then filters are really not necessary, since you can simply replicate the effects in Photoshop. The only filter that is both hard to replicate and the most versatile is the polarizer. If you are just shooting black and white, a red filter will dramatically darken the sky and foliage since it absorbs both green and cyan. As I have mentioned in other threads, I do keep a Skylight 1A filter on all of my lenses, just to protect the front element from scratches and chips, since the 1A does not affect the image in any way.
