no offense but what the hell?? i just don t get how some simple animal shots for example or shots like this one for instance http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=corngrowth-1226909844.jpg
( the highest c index right now!) whereas some others as better not to say better don t (not to say have a much less c index) i just don t get itand honestly i think that if i hadn t posted so much photos(more than 700) and got some pretty high scores these latest months( the best one is84 and then it is in the 70's) i would have stopped posting, i mean why bother taking, working photos and then posting them(many of them) if it s to get 50 or so max not to say less to much less(the majority of my galery!) if i knew i was really not talented at all i d understand, well, i think i wouldn t have posted any in the first place ,lol but i don t think it s the case...
anyways...

Please don't let the c:index upset you. It certainly is not the most statistically accurate representation of the quality or composition of 'your' images. There is sometimes just no rhyme or reason for the number. I don't think the index is going to go away, but after you spend some years here, you will begin to ignore it completely. What matters is that you are presenting your best work, viewing the work of others and possibly learning some tips and ideas from others as well as enjoying the camaraderie of friendly folks who share your avid enthusiasm for these wonderful crafts of photography and artistic expression.

:o) Hmmm... 55 pages of comraderie and probably counting!
but if anyone cares, I think (and please don't let this deflect anyone from the topic!), it should be camaraderie...

From the Merriam-Webster on-line dictionaryż

Function: noun
Etymology: French, from camarade comrade
Date: 1840

: a spirit of friendly good-fellowship

Anyway... this is especially one of those times where we get the idea which was very well 'spelled'-out by Cindy. :o)

GaelJet. You are not alone in feeling like this. I would say two things. Some people have a sort of glee club of friends and get very high CI index because of the way their friends vote for them. This is not a measure of quality and it does not mean that the picture will end up in the permanent gallery. I have 3 pictures in the permanent gallery with CI of 68, 60 and 54 so high scores do not matter hugely, just the quality of the picture. Try posting to other sites and see how they stack up there, that way you will get a balanced view of your talent.

Don't take any notice of my comments. I post pictures that get a CI of 0! (Well almost) Crysophilax's Gallery and Web Page

Gaeljet, you are not the only person,i and other people do not usually get high scores, the best thing to do is to ignore the scores.

I think the above comments well summarize the truth about the c-index. Most of us at one time or another have wondered why some of our works don't seem as "popular" as others that appear to us to be of lower quality. I'm not going to bother disparaging the c-index. Instead I'll say that you should listen to the advice of other artists when it comes to improving your work, and you should listen to the advice of your audience if indeed you want to please them with your art, but it is ultimately destructive to you if you let others tell you what to create. Create art for you. Try to do it well, and learn from the techniques of others, but create it for you not others.

I want to debunk this treacle stuff, if I might. I have lots of friends all over the site. Yes, they give me good comments and they leave suggestions when I need advice. And, I get all kinds of C:index scores. So, how do my friendships affect my scores? I don't think they do. I believe though that people are more honest in the voting booth and I think that those who are non-Cadre tip the balance in the VB because they 'have to' vote on ten images for every post they upload, whereas Cadre members don't even have to vote at all.

All things aside...some of the best shots on here aren't anywhere near the top C-index wise. If everyone didn't post their shots because they didn't think they would score high, we wouldn't have these great shots. Post because you want to...that's it.

My dear I'm pretty sure you're not a member of "the club". You've been around long enough to let your art stand on its own without having to artificially boost your own scores.

Gaeljet2, if your views and downloads are low and your c-index is also low, then you have answered your own question. People view and download what pleases them, and if they aren't viewing or downloading your image, then you might want to look at other images that are downloaded a lot, and try to figure out what they all have in common. I have noticed that images with bright colors that really stand out on the "New Images" gallery get a lot of views, but the image has to be good or really bad to get downloaded. For myself, if the views and downloads counts are high and the download-to-view ratio is high, and the comments are plentiful and genuinely thoughtful and complimentary, then I allow myself to believe the image is a good one that people really like (as opposed to them just saying so). If they aren't viewing the images, and they're not downloading them, then they probably don't really like them.

A fun thing to do now and then is to post an image on different sites and compare the reactions. When similar reactions occur... wooo... I REALLY pay attention. The differences are also instructive in their own way.

Gaeljet, I agree with Leslie - I have done it myself. All images I posted had been posted here - the results were quite surprising - some that flopped here did well and won awards there - out of the 50 allowable images 28 gained 1 or more (minor)awards decided solely on members' votes. Conversely others that did well here sank to the bottom of the heap there. The ones that received good scores and comments on both sites are the ones I feel most satisfaction with.
On the other site it was possible to vote in individual categories or ramdomly for all categories.
There are drop down boxes for comments

Technically Excellent
Very Sharp
Great Composition
Unique Photo
Nice Perspective
Good Post Processing

Lacking interest
Multiple distractions
Out of Focus
Over Excposed
Under Exposed
Poor Composition
Unlevel Horizon
Low Reolution
Plus a space for individual comments.
I found the pre-chosen comments most impersonal, and although often helpful did not always reflect the final voting score. One image that received "lacking Interest" scored 7+ (scale of 1-10) and gained 2 awards.

My 50 images there have now been automatically archived and I have let my short membership lapse.

Any voting system has its failings.

Good advice has already been given - strive to present the best you can and take and ASK for advice.

As +regmar said - create your art for you.

I have looked through your gallery and agree you do have talent and some of the images I would have expected higher points for but that is something we all have to deal with. There are others in your gallery that lack any "Oomph" and are marked accordingly - something that can be said for most galleries, my own most certainly included.

no regmar, my pictures are of course not all low c index AND few downloads, but it can happen that pretty often that this is the case, so when i know that s not my best photos posted at all it s ok, but when i would have thought it would have got much better than what i actually get and that it s frequently the case i m starting to wonder what the matter is? am i such a bad photographer or what else??
sometimes i don t get it, i get a a pretty high c index(at least for me let s say btw 60 and 70 or even sometimes much) but not many views and or downloads..there are also the comments posted, i ůmean sometimes i got good comments but bad c index and or bad views and or downloads it s kind of weird i think...

otherwise you can t say that i or somebody posts for the sake of posting for different reasons..
for instance there s already the fact that not everybody likes the same things, i mean we all have different tastes about everything even though it is true there are certain things that can be generally more appreciated than some others, even some of my less liked shot can get good comments from people pleased of having got the chance to downloaded it and use it as desktops..

plus i post for different reasons, to get comments, all kind(even though i confess i rather positive ones better, lol)
to see what c index they can get, or else to see how viewed and downloaded they can be ..

Ah, if you want to post photos, post them, and don't worry a whole lot about your C-Index. Post because YOU like the photos. There will be others who like them as well, and some who don't. Beauty is very subjective.

Well, I didn't see that much wrong with your comment, Foxfire66, however, after 10 years in law enforcement, I may just have a saltier vocabulary than you do. Heaven help us all.

Heard THAT Mam!!! God Bless ya!!

Like ya said, and I said...."I post cause I love this site..."Beauty is very subjective".

And like I said before..."Opinions" are like......Those little semi round things that we all got". We ALL got one. :-)

If you really get all bent out of shape over your "C Index"...well, you ain't uploadin your pictures here for the right reasons.

If people like my stuff? I'm very happy. If not? Well, thanks for lookin anyway.

There's just SO many Catagorys here on Caedes. We all have our preferences on what we like to look at. Just ignore the "C index". I mean really....
