Copyright Policy

Considering the enormous number of rips from here would it be possible for members to have the option of Caedes.net in the form of a logo being added to their images ?

Although it would not prevent the problem, as some images are taken that already have the artist's name added, it could act as a stronger deterrent.

It appears that many visitors do not read the Copright information, or choose to deliberately ignore it.

Also I think it may work to have the copyright policy prominently displayed on the front page together with a link to the full Copyright information.

Something along the lines of . .

"Please enjoy these images. You are free to download them for your own personal use. Without the permission of individual artists you are not permitted to use them in other collections, claim them as your own work, or use for material gain. Please view our full Copright Policy HERE "

Alternatively something similar could be displayed as as addition to the narrative beneath each image.

Lyn, I like that idea a lot, though I prefer a small "Caedes" logo perhaps over a Caedes spider. Having a logo or copyright mark on any wallpaper image will cause some people to not download it, but if a user prefers to have the logo and copyright I think we should have that option as well. Thanks for suggesting this. Now if there were only three more Caedes' to program it...

Lyn... if a picture is posted on the internet without restricted access, it is up for grabs. Putting a mark on the picture probably does little but create a little photoshop work. Perhaps the key would be to have an option, when posting, of having download access to more than 640x480 (or some other lower magic number) restricted to the poster's friends. But imagine all the requests for friendship that you could receive. The only absolute protection is to refrain from posting! I know that Webshots (using Adobe Flash Player) has moved into Friends Only can download.
Or maybe those who feel they are being targeted by these image thieves could simply post a small version of their work and make their full/larger version available through other means. There are a number of people out there who feel you are in the wrong for catching them stealing! :o(

The Eighth Commandment might have to be changed to...
Thou shalt not catch a thief! After all, the Third Commandment "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain" has been changed to 'Thou shalt not use any name of the Lord' in at least one country! Oops! Please, don't let this comment take you to another topic here! :o)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

Moving right along, posting the website and a copyright won't *prevent* anyone from stealing the images, but it will make their crimes VERY evident to anyone who sees the images.

Con, This being essentially a wallpaper site it would be rather defeating its purpose to restrict the downloadable size.

Reg, I really like the idea of a Caedes spider:)

I think most members get upset when they see caedes images being offered for sale elsewhere as posters, mouse pads, mugs etc.

I never have, and have no desire make money from any work I do (unlikely that anyone would want to buy an anyway)but to see others attempting to do so makes me angry.
Saying they 'didn't know' is no excuse - they know enough to try to gain from the work and efforts of others.

I know exactly how you feel Lyn trust me

But I belong to other upload sites, & everyone reluctantly agrees there's practically nothing to be done to combat image piracy. )o;
If you really love a particular image simply don't upload it, or dramatically downsize it b4 uploading.

Remember watermarks can be removed !

If you have a garden please feed the birds this freezing cold winter, & supply drinking water not ice, it's so important. . . . Help dwindling wildlife survive this year.

Maybe we should accept piracy, except for commercial uses... :-/
Lyn: I like your idea. A small "Uploaded by XXX on www.caedes.net" could be fine IMO

You could put a minor blurb in your description such as:

My gallery and images contained in it are Copyright ©2005-2008 laurengary. All rights reserved. All the materials contained in my deviantART gallery may not be reproduced, copied, edited, published, transmitted, borrowed, duplicated, or printed in any way without my express written permission. My images do not belong to the public domain.

Granted, it probably won't stop anybody in the long run, but it does get the point across & let them know how you feel. Posting a small image is a big deterrent too.

You could always put something in your description saying that if someone really wanted it as a wallpaper they could e-mail you & you'd be happy to e-mail them a copy.
