Using Adobe Photoshop

Could someone give me a few tips on using Adobe Photoshop to mod images of a single person? I'm not talking about how to improve the features of the person, but to create something unique out of the picture itself. For example, what I was mainly thinking about was how to change an image of a person (somewhat at a far distance) to making it look like a shadow, or just anything unique. Thanks.

Do you have an image that you could use as an example. Its often easy to learn by copying effects that you see in other images.

I learned most of what I know about Photoshop through visiting Borders and B&N and flipping through their books. If you have an older version, you might find used books on that version for cheap.
