I made a small update to the upload process (behind the scenes). When you send a non-JPEG file, the system will convert it to JPEG and then save it at 95% quality (this is normal). If you send a JPEG file, the system will only recompress your file if the file size is larger than 1 byte per pixel (most JPEGs should be well under this).
The idea is that we can make sure that we keep as much image quality while not wasting disk space. We will not recompress your uploaded image as long as it is sent at a reasonable compression. You still have the option of using a lossless format such as PNG.
Thanks for the information on this, I had been uploading in tif format for sometime now and Hope I was not taking up too much space. If so I'm very sorry, but will now use the png. Someone had told me sometime ago that the tiff was the best to use and so I started doing that. Here just of late my images won't upload in the largest file and now I know why. So very sorry but will behave! :) =^..^=Sandi
As I believe at one point, and it still the case that somewhere (other discussion threads et al) png and tiff has been mentioned in the same breath as better options to upload to the site to avoid recompression issues.
Annnd ... good good. Something that may need to be addressed Has surfaced.
** For *caedes **
See Jerome's thread about viewing images at the largest size, and as we now now ... in tiff format is creating a problem when viewed. As in, our infamous red 'x' shows up, no image.
Sandi, I just checked myself in your galleries, on the last three? Four uploads of yours?
And indeed I can't view the largest resolution sizes either.
Stay tuned and again, no worries abou.. ... er, yeaaah ... the uploading of tiff images caused the site servers to crash.

Kidding, *caedes will have a think on the above and sort it, rest assured.
Les: The issue for Jerome with TIFF images has been fixed with this update. All images will end up being JPEG. Also, there is no need to worry about the upload format. TIFF and PNG will work fine, they are converted to JPEG in order to save space.
Thanks for the information on this once again and I will just go with png so it will not be a future problem. Thanks Caedes for the wonderful site and the help on this. Sandi
