Randy, you should know by now that anything in Caedes that isn't colourful, bright and preferably feathered gets a low CI. mid 20's seems to be about my average recently for non conforming images. Wait for Darkness to get its CI today. I find petals a stark image but with interest and beauty. probably not everyone's cup of tea for a desktop but as an image it works. Try to ignore the fact that pictures posted with no negative space get high CI in a negative space contest. I like Pessimistic petals.
Hoi, Randy !
I agree the C.I is much to low !,your image is very good, but I think the problem is the 'frame' !
When I take a look at it, in full screen, the 'negative'
black background is more or less half a frame !
I think when you remove the frame every download in every resolution has its own
black background, no matter the size, and it looks much better !
That is my humble opinion !
Do you agree ?
Greetz !
John
I wondered about the frame!! I had the original with no frame and it looked OK. I thought the frame works worked as well...I didn't know and, well you see the one I posted.
i imagine many users vote things flippently low
i often see an image of mine getting a high rating say 85
after say 11 votes then three votes later the rating is
down to 40 or less as if people vote it 0.
all fair i suppose but quite demoralising at times.
mercifully the selection board often ignores the voting systems peculiarities.
the negative space contest is throwing up some difficult images
to assimilate in terms of aesthetics.
and i dont mind telling you it's got me reeling in agony.,,because
a] trying to come up with something is making me ill
b] each new image posted to the competition confounds and confuses me even more.
sillouettes, chiarascuro, negatives, i wish i could nail it down.
sorry about the rant......i've been bottling it up....
all the best in this devil of a competition Randy.
sadly i dont know if your image is a good example of
depicting quality negative space.....i wish i did.
it's doin my head in i tells yuz.
I like the idea, but composition is lacking for me. The far right flower distracts from the group of three. Crop that out and I think your composition would be stronger.
I actually did what you John mentioned and re-posted Pessimistic Petals II . It's doing worse than my original post, HaHaHa!! Oh well, another contest down the drain!!
I definitely like the crop and that you went without the white frame. My vote goes to the re-worked version...forget the stinking index!!
What might work even better is if you included that 4th flower in the shot...but including the whole group of 4 and not cutting anything out. Having the group of 3 at the left side of the frame and the 4th in the top right (full flower, not cut off) would give you a strong composition in my opinion. That smaller one in the back gives it a bit more depth than the re-worked version.
Two rules; one ... don't sweat the small stuff.
Secondly, it is indeed alllll small stuff, when allll is said and done.
That said, I am glad to see an entry/submission from you. :o)
At it's roots, this contest is about composition. There, a lil' secret has been let out of the vault.
@ Randy:
I liked your first submission/entry. And agree with those that had stated, 'had you not cut off the far right bloom/flower ... it would have been a stronger composition' (<--- paraphrasing here).
Kind of curious now, as to the 'why' you did that?
Poor Randy .... just out of curiousity, I liked your first entry too, though I'm kinda on the fence about that 4th flower. However... here's the "poor Randy" part..... did you ever consider a smaller frame ? Say half the size of your first ?
I liked the frame because it really made your flowers pop & gave them added definition & defined your space.
I'm not a BIG fan of the c-index and generally don't pay much mind to it, but, when this came outta the gate at a 22 I was a wee bewildered.
Just lOOkin' for ANY critique as to why it may have such a low score. Go ahead...bite it, chew it up, and spit it out!!

Thanks!!
