Your Days Are Numbered !

::mesmerized

"Some mathematicians believe that numbers were invented by human beings, others, equally competent, believe that numbers have an independent existence of their own and are merely observed by sufficiently intelligent mortals."
(E.T Bell...The Magic of Numbers)

And with that quote...I'd like to propose another challenge...based on numbers...or more specifically, the 'highlighting of numbers' or the NUMERICAL SIGNIFICANCE present in an image that makes it stand out or different than the usual or commonplace.

Numbers are present in almost everything in life...our age, our bank account, the number of kids, pets, cars we have, the repetition of a pattern on our favorite shirt etc.

Certainly they play a role in the creation of fractals and how unique or seemingly infinite that fractal is. They also show up in photos but I'm NOT referring to just any numbers such as 3 seagulls or two eyes...that's not especially noteworthy...BUT if one eye was brown and one eye was blue then the numerical aspect of that photo becomes more significant...another example, a license plate or street number is not particularly interesting unless it was 9-11, 666, or maybe the unlucky 13...another example, a bunch of Canada geese or a herd of cows may not be that unusual but if one cow was apart from the group, all by his lonesome, suddenly the numerical aspect of that photo becomes highlighted...so, I hope you catch my drift in what I'm proposing....in other words, whether the number of whatever it is in your image is small or great, it should be the main focal point, adding impact or making the image different than usually seen...it can be something you stumble upon or something you manufacture...PM me if you need further clarification...a couple of visual examples:

EGGS...one white one stands out among the other brown ones...there wouldn't be the same numerical significance if all eggs were brown...

REINDEER IV...in this the sheer number IS the significant factor...not so much if they were geese or seagulls tho' which are much more common to most of us...

So there are different ways to interpret this challenge...one more HERE to show how you can really play around with the concept.

As in Stillness Speaks, I suggest submitting ONLY 2 images, posting links or the titles of those images to this thread, preferrably something brand new but if something currently in your gallery fits by all means include it...

I am setting a 2 week deadline for submissions, Friday, May 1st. 9 p.m. Pacific Time. After that we'll take a vote again...not sure yet how many winners or choices allowed, it just depends on the level of participation.

Open to all members and art forms and as always, keeping the COC and quality of image in mind.

Please note: Lauren mentioned on the Stillness Speaks thread that she had an idea for a challenge. If and when she proceeds with that this is in no way intended to interfere with hers as there's no reason we can't have two going on at the same time...participation is voluntary and people can choose to join one, the other, or both...whatever tickles your fancy.

Not sure how successful this concept might be...maybe not so much...or maybe quite fascinating...ready?...1,2,3...GO!

Thanks for your offer to help, Paul...outside of your help in spreading the word again I think I'll be ok...I'm going to keep it simple this time...no special greetings for everyone, no music, just a statement of the challenge and a vote at the end...good luck...looking forward to what you come up with.

Man this is ubercool! My imagination runneth over, pity my photographic skill doesn't match my imagination. :) Hey Paul, at first I didn't see the 8s, kept adding up the arches and saying, "but that's a five..." lol "...or even with the reflections that's a ten.....ohhhhh, now I see the 8s." See, that's exactly the kind of thing this focused but vague kind of theme can highlight. Love it. Now to see if I can come up with something.

CONGRATULATIONS to the 4 top winners and an excellent job by all participants! Not an easy task given the theme and short time-frame.
It was fascinating to watch all the images come in and the different interpretations.
I suspect we have barely scratched the surface where numbers impact our lives and the world around us and it may well be a theme we may want to explore again sometime.

Mimi & Me will be back again in the future with more ideas for you but may hold off for awhile in case others want to step in with some ideas of their own so keep watching the Member-Initiated Projects board for announcements.

Thank you all for your participation. As always, it’s been a pleasure.

I'm 'honored' to have an honorable mention! And congrats to all winners. There were so many great shots! I was happy to have the chance to use that one. I took it at our Caedes get-together last summer and really liked it, but didn't feel right sharing it til this contest. So thanks to you for initiating this project as well!

Congrats to all the winners, and thanx to Pat for running another great contest. I was a bit engrossed in a side project and didn't have anything that really seemed to fit, but I am looking forward to the next challenge.

I certainly enjoyed tracking the thread and seeing all the great entries...thanx again to everyone and most especially to Pat.

Sorry you missed this one, Rich, but I know you had your own probject going at the time and it's important to follow your own passions. The artistic appetite can be almost insatiable, always hungry for something new to sink its' teeth into but it can also be very frustrating when you draw a blank for something different to try so hopefully these challenges serve a couple of purposes...something to shoot for in between the 'real' contests and also something to focus on when you run out of new ideas of your own.
