No images on the site are saved in bmp format. If it looks like they are in bmp format to you when you try to save them, then it is your web browser that's doing the conversion. I don't currently have a computer with IE installed, so maybe someone else could help Sherpa with the problem?
I don't think what you're describing is even possible with the software that I have running on the site. What exactly makes you think that they are bmp format? Can you give me a link to an image that is bmp?
ya here http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=cesitar36-1067287533.jpg when i download the image, then right click on it to save it, it will only save it as bitmap, however this is only true for this image and some others....
Yeah I have that problem on my gateway, but on my new custom computer it normally saves into .jpg (only randomly on this gateway does it do the .jpg). When it does say "untitled.bmp" just save the image as whatever you want to to be called and then also put ".jpg" at the end. It will then save it to the folder as a ".jpg".
I noticed that today, I uploaded an image (in JPG format), and then accidently deleted it from my PC, so I downloaded it from the site and it would only let me get it in BMP format...
That was suggested on Microsoft's knowledge base, and it works for me. The problem occurs when you have too many files in your Temporary Internet Files directory, and it can also cause a problem where opening files directly (instead of saving them, for example zips or programs) results in a file not found.
And about submitting pictures as bitmaps, you actually can.. that's usually how I upload my pics, because I can never get the encoding right and it ends up looking murky or whatnot.
I think I know why IE is acting strange like that. When a new image is uploaded it is only put on www.caedes.net not images.caedes.net. So when the image isn't found at images.caedes.net the server redirects it to the www.caedes.net server. However the two servers are syncronized every night to move the new images on www.caedes.net to images.caedes.net.
For some reason IE has a bug where it will on save the image as bmp if it is an images that was found through a redirect. This is probably because IE isn't smart enough to remember the original format of the image (probably when the cache is full as g8way points out). It just converts everthing to bmp when it displays it in the browser, throwing away the original downloaded file.
My personal opinion is that this is a retarded bug in IE. For now I'm going to make the image a link to itself so that you can do a shift-click or something.
Caedes: I think this is a problem of IE. I work with Opera 7.0 and I never encountered this problem.
Sherpa: I tried with "http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=cesitar36-1067287533.jpg" (with Opera), right click and.... jpg.
