Its good to see your are eager to learn and interested in the art. One thing you must understand tho, is that with any art, there is a wealth of material to learn. People spend years in college learning, or teaching themselves out in the field through experience. I dont believe anyone will even begin to scratch the surface with you in one email. The main thing I suggest to you is simply getting out there and taking images. From experience you will decide for yourself what you like and dont like. Secondly, explore others work, run through the permanent galleries on this site and other photography sites. Third, read read read. There are alot of topics in this photography discussion to read, as well as a wealth of free information available on the internet, or at your local library. Four, ask questions, never hurts to ask.
Go crazy! Don't be afraid to take multiple pictures of the same subject. If you can, try and move lighting around. And depending on what you're taking a picture of, go out of your way to take one or two shots at crazy angles. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but when you take several shots, chances are pretty high you're going to get a winner.
Be open to criticism. If you look back at the first drawings you did, you could do better now, right?? So ask for "best point/worst point" comments from family & friends. This makes it easier to listen to, and accept, advice. Often we are so amazed by the possibilities of new techniques we are blind to further potential for a while, until we explore further. Bearing this in mind, as SlyCell says, Go crazy, but remember you are on a journey. Others are further down the road, Some are like you and some have never begun. In no time you will feel a sense of progress so long as you allow yourself the creative freedom to make mistakes. Have fun!
First pick up the photographers hand book, Another one I suggest is photography for dummies, it's a great book and has very direct to the point and simple instructions, I've suggested it to a lot of beginers.
If it's a digital, get DIGITAL Photography for Dummies. I made a mistake and picked up Hoto. for dummies and it was mostly stuff about lenses and devlopment.
im just gona use one of the school cams... sony 2megapixel.. thats all i know... but if u want me to snatch more info i can get it, and once i get a job, money ill buy a good one...

and the photography for dummies... she said she had it, but kinda lost, but she said if she could find it she ould lend it to me...
thanks for the advice guys... much apreciated ;)
For me... photography isn't a proffesion, but something relaxing and calming to kinda chill out every once in a while. My main rule is just to try and get something worth-while on the camera... it's almost a competition with myself =). I think you'll do very good with photography, wish you the best of luck.
thanks...
i actualy convinced my mother in buying me a digital cam for xmas... any sujestions in wot i should get? im in canada so if you could also put the average price in canadian dollars it would be very much apreciated...
i would like to upload some photos, but cannot submit them? keep getting message that pics are too large.digital camers photos. How do i make them smaller to facilitate uploading?
what you can do jds to make your photos smaller is download a program called "GIMP" it is basically a watered down version of Adobe Photoshop, and it's free. i am not sure of where to get off the top of my head but i'm sure if you google it you could find it. after you get all that installed etc. (i am not exactly sure, i haven't used gimp) but if it is at all like photoshop, select in one of the menus "image size" and making sure to keep the proportions the same, change the size of the image to 1600x1200 pixels.(the biggest size that Caedes will accept) and then re-save the file in jpeg format, at maximum quality. I hope this helped you jds. if not, feel free to personal message me from my profile. good luck with this stuff.
P.S. you must have a pretty good camera if it saves images larger than 1600x1200. great for enlargments.

if you search the main discussion board, there are several topic relating to changing image sizes (by resolution and file size) to accomodate uploading images for desktop usage. Good luck, cant wait to see your results.
To photograph birds with a natural background, mix some peanut butter and your regular bird seed to make a paste. Take a spatula and spread on a branch close to the feeder that the birds already frequent. This avoids the manmade feeder and provides for a much nicer photo. Same holds true for squirrels. Good luck:-)
Try "scale image" in Gimp rather than "image size".
But if that's all you need it for, use something simpler than Gimp! That's definitely a sledgehammer to crack not even a nut, but more of a sesame seed.
Describing Gimp as a "watered down version" of Photoshop is unnecessarily pejorative, I think - especially from one who has never actually used it.
