fallowing in the footsteps of les's apophysis challenge i made a script for apophysis to use in a challenge. first, some rules: the script only works in apophysis 2.08 beta 3-D hack. you cant use any other programs besides apophysis. last, you cant use plugins for apophysis or other scripts besides this one:
x := 0;
If not InputQuery('Explosion', 'Linear Factor', x) then Exit;
z := 0;
If not InputQuery(' Explosion ', 'Spherical Factor', z) then Exit;
w := 1;
If not InputQuery(' Explosion ', 'Sinusoidal Factor', w) then Exit;
y := z * 10 ^ 6
If z < 2 then z := y ^7
x := x/10;
w := w/15;
AddTransform
With Transform do
begin
linear := x
sinusoidal := w
spherical := z
weight:= 5.5
end;
Wonderful idea, Dylan! I always like a good challenge :)
I have a couple questions though;
- According to Sourceforge.net , the latest build is 2.08 3D hack (no beta), from Dec. 25, 2008. Is this build acceptable for your challenge?
- I have all my 3D plugins installed in the same folder, within the Apo directory. I have moved the entire folder 'Plugins3D', from the Apo directory to comply with your rules. I assume that the Plugins (shaded variations) that appear after I open Apo 3D hack, are the default plugins that come pre-installed. These can be used?
- Do you have an expiration date for your challenge?
Sounds interesting! It shouldn't be too bad to try. I'm anxious to try the script and thanks for starting the challenge! I'm with Lori up there though wondering if the 208 3D hack is acceptable cause I don't have the beta of it either. And I DO understand that no other plugins or scripts can be used.

i just dropped in to tell you that i think you are all geniuses. i do not have the foggiest idea.......not a clue....about what you are discussing......i'm a bit jealous. good for you for knowing so much.
Does that mean that we can't put it through an editing program after we make it as well? I mean just to touch it up with brightness and stuff like that.
Joanie
Well .. only waiways (dylan) can answer that, but I would assume NO .. you should display your ability with the contest program
as you probably know .. if you check the box for "postprocess render" on the render window .. a window will pop up on completion (your image saves automatically) and that allows you to adjust brightness\gamma (hit apply) and background color (applies automatically)
note .. you can NOT save with a new name .. so .. find the image with Win-Explorer (or whatever) and rename the image before saving ALT versions
this, essentially, gives you FREE renders .. because you can now get WHITE backgrounds, etc .. for FREE
just find a way to rename your ALTS in a way that means something
the "post" window also helps as a test-render viewer
Well it didn't help me much...lol...I tried that post process render before and I couldn't get it to work right for me. Les told me about it before. So doing that is not gonna help me. I'll just do the best I can IF I can make anything at all out of the script. Thanks Keith.
Joanie
I forgot exactly what happens when I try it. Its been about a year since I tried it. I think it was something to have to do with making the changes. I couldn't change anything. Oh well...I really don't care anyway...hehe...Thanks anyway Keith.
Joanie
After you copy, go to the apop and click the script tab and then click edit. It doesn't make any difference what script is showing. In the upper right hand corner is a little white tab and that gives you a 'new' blank script. Paste it there, then click the little 'save' button and name the script. That should do it Jacqueline!
You might think I'm crazy but I have another question...We can use any flame to use the script on, right? Cause all I use mainly is flames that I've made and rendered and keep them to redo and use other scripts on and mess around with. Just making sure cause from what I've been trying already I'm not particularly liking this challenge.
Joanie
Man, I don't know what to tell you then Jacqueline! Maybe restart the apop. My acts up sometimes and usual if I just do that things seem to straighten up.
It works better in the 3D hack then the reg. apo. I'm gettin a big o' bright ball pretty much.......I can tell this is gonna take some triangulation. We'll hafta see on this one. :)

Its rough John! Out of all the flames I have saved I've only found 2 that I can mess around with!! And they're not that great...lol...Good luck buddy!
Joanie
Sounds like a fun challenge. After reading tthrough the rules & everyone's comments ... I'm just wondering if one can add another transform (excluding plugin's of course) or do we work with the script as is?
Actually I had to download the newest version of the 3D Hack ... I still had 2.06 ... that's how much I've worked with 3D.
Woohoo.. finally got it working.. lol.. so here it is my first attempt of messing with the script.. took a lot of moving triangles and changing values used Spiral Batch 2 script and ended up with this.. Heavenly Angels Thanks for the Challenge Dylan I'm working on another one ;)

Thanks Dylan, got one today for ya.......it's a lot larger file though because you can't take it to a program and resize it. Lace Dancers The first try. :)

I don't do fractals but sure am glad to see a challenge here just for fractalists and have viewed all the entries so far and think they're all just fabulous...and they all used the same script?...amazing...just goes to show how little I know about this stuff but it sure is pleasing to the eye...looking forward to more.
It does look like a cucumber slice! This one still has some charistics of the script, you didnt transform it too much! and pat its never too late to try apophysis! there are some excellent tutorials on deviantart.com! :)
I have changed the value numbers quite a few times. Sometimes it did me good and sometimes it didn't. My results weren't the best. The higher the values the worse it got. I guess it depends on the flame being used.
Annnnd ... I've been messing around with your script.
Got a question for you, that has it's roots with respect to the added transform. And in particular, the default values that result for the Spherical Variation.
Seems to me and I could have this wrong (correct and enlighten us if you can?) ... if you enter simply a value of one (1), the actual resultant numbers that I have observed thus far, are in the range of ... 1E042, for example.
By changing this value, to that of simply one (1.0) or slightly smaller/bigger ... found it to be the ... er, the more sensitive of the three and indeed impacts the look of the flame more so.
Or should I say ... can readily impact the appearance of the flame.
Have I got that right/correct?
And to add some further enlightenment for those participating in your challenge/contest here, if I may (was curious and went for a look see to get a gauge on what the creative results might be) ... I did take a look at your one posting on the site here, wherein you employed your script. That of, and namely; "lavender flower"".
yes, you are correct. i had no idea apophysis could use letters in the values. i wonder what the E stands for. i've ben messing around with that value and ive also gotter a B. please enlighten me if you can.
oops, my bad. it was an E with the edge hidden and im tired. ive found out it takes a very small value to even show any thing in the flame viwer(0.0000001) thanks it makes sence now.
Hmm, my laptop crashes every time I attempt moving the transforms. Anybody's got any ideas as to why? Should I try to re-install Apop? Or is it just a characteristic of my OS (XP Media Center edition)?
Does it still occur after closing and reopening the program? I for one, have not heard of this behavior before, but certainly don't think it has to do with your OS.
Times up! i guess we should have a vote to decide the winner, so pm me your 3 favorite entrys. i still cant figure out how to put links in comments so can someone help me with that?
i want to put all the links in the same place to make it easier for people to vote on them. I'll keep trying though.
Congrats to the winners as well as all participants!! I really enjoyed this challenging contest, and seeing the variety of fractals that came about using the same script! And thanks to those that voted on my 'helix spiral' :)
A special thanks to you, Dylan, for initiating the contest, and for all the work you put into it! Thanks also for the use of your script.
Wow ... I've been away for a week ... didn't realize the contest results were in.
Congrat's to the winner's & to everyone that entered. All the entries were excellent, so to me everyone is a winner. Thanks to Dylan for bringing us this contest ... it was a fun script to work with. Also, Thanks for the votes & support on my entry, Mermaid Rhapsody.
This contest was both fun & a learning experience.
x := 0;
If not InputQuery('Explosion', 'Linear Factor', x) then Exit;
z := 0;
If not InputQuery(' Explosion ', 'Spherical Factor', z) then Exit;
w := 1;
If not InputQuery(' Explosion ', 'Sinusoidal Factor', w) then Exit;
y := z * 10 ^ 6
If z < 2 then z := y ^7
x := x/10;
w := w/15;
AddTransform
With Transform do
begin
linear := x
sinusoidal := w
spherical := z
weight:= 5.5
end;
CalculateBounds
flame.x := 0
flame.y := 0
flame.brightness := 50
just copy and paste this into the script editor.
at some point in time i'll decide a winner.
post a link on this thread so i can see all the fractals.
by the way there are no prizes. sorry about that.
