Don't Drink and Photoshop

Well I went and goofed sumpin' up on my Photoshop and am lOOkin' to get it back the way it was. I'll try to explain as best as possible.

I run Adobe Photoshop 7.

I open a pic I took. I have the Rectangular Marquee Tool selected and then left click & hold and make a box or selection on my photo. This is now where it goofed as the box I made I'd like to make it bigger or perhaps smaller and I use to be able to move my cursor over to one of the edges and simple make the box bigger or smaller, but now it doesn't allow me to do that. It use to give me a duel arrow when I got close to an edge and now it's gone. I know about right clicking and free transformation but I didn't have to do that in the past.

Once I make a box / selection how can I get my cursor to switch to a little duel arrow when on an edge so I can make the selection bigger or smaller.

Thanks for an help!! I hope I explained it well enough and will check back tonight in hopes for some help to resolve.

I think it depends on the tool you currently have selected. Make sure you have the arrow tool selected and not something else (the flood tool for example). Not sure if this will solve your issue but I vaguely recall figuring this out and some point after much frustration with a similar issue.

Randy does Photoshop 7 have the crop tool, as this allows you to select an area of the photo then move it around and resize from corners or edges? CS2 does which I use, but I am unfamiliar with Photoshop7. Other than that maybe hover over the tool and see if there are other tools within that which will do the same as the crop tool.

Hey Randy, I am not using PS 7, but try this;

Make a selection, and then click on the move tool. This will put the little white boxes on the sides/corners of the selection to allow for minor adjustments.

Randy, I'm not sure when it appeared (I think with CS1), but the only way to transform a selection made with the Rectangular Marquee by pulling the edges is to go under "Select > Transform Selection"

Otherwise, the type of behavior you're describing occurs when using the Crop Tool.

If you're dealing with a version prior to the "Transform Selection" option, your only choice to make the box smaller on only one side is to hold down the alt or ctrl key (I don't remember which one, but a minus sign will appear on your cursor when you select the right one) and draw a new marquee box that will deselect the overlapping area.

Hey Randy,

Not sure if this is 'it, however, have you looked at the "Style" drop down menu on the top menu bar to check if you have inadvertently checked 'normal', 'fixed size', etc.?

Or ...

Must be a way to reset your "Preferences", I would think, back to that of 'default' stuff. Most likely found in/at the bottom of the "Edit" menu.

Ok, maybe this;

After clicking on the marquee selection tool, look at the options bar at the top and r-click the picture of the tool in the bar. I believe you should be given the option to 'reset tool' and 'reset all tools'. Hope that works for you Randy :)

In Photoshop 6 clicking on 'Select' on the top toolbar and choosing 'Transform Selection' gives the little arrows.

Last resort ... uninstall .. reinstall.

Ensuring along the way, that if you meet up with a prompt to save any program settings ... choose 'no'.

And then search your program directories on your C: drive ... after uninstalling ... to check/see that all folders have, in fact, been deleted.

And ... done.

Back to what you had/experienced before the mishap.

use the arrow tool - make sure the 'show transform controls' tick box is checked in the tool options.

Thanks Uncle Phil, I'll play around with it tonight when I get home. I took a quick peek just now and am not too sure what you meant, sorry.

Arrow tool (the Path Selection Tool)? Hmmm, well off to work for now...

Well, I ain't figured it out.

My first tool is the Marquee Tool (M), to the right of that is the Move Tool (V) but I had no luck there and I didn't see any 'show transform' do-dad box.

When the Marquee Tool is selected there's a small drop down arrow to the right of the box which when clicked opens and shows "no tool preset defined for current tool", I've played around with tryin' to load presets but again no luck.

Oh well, I can still do what I'm wanting I just have to make a selection on my photo then right click in the selection and do a Transform Selection, that gives me the ability to move one side in or out (or up or down)...I just didn't have to do that prior.

I sure appreciate all the help & input!!

my bad - in Photoshop 7 the wording is slightly different - Show Bounding Box (appears in the options bar below the menus) - Not show transform controls. it still is the option for the Move tool though.

I did see that, Show Bounding Box option on the Move Tool but that wasn't what I was lOOkin' for. When I used that it s t r e t c h e d my selection box AND image.

it will only stretch it if you dont have the shift key pressed down to lock the aspect ratio or have the link symbol between the height and width scale factor clicked - also in the options bar below the menus

Hello Randy, I am also using Photoshop Elements 7. It is not possible in PS7 to pull out or reduce the size of a marquee square that you have already drawn. You can do that only with the crop tool. With the marquee square all you can do is keep the space bar pressed and keep the left click also pressed so that you can move the square and enlarge/reduce it as you want till you have got the right size in the right place. This info you can find also in the help columns. Hope this helps you.

you still looking for the transform arrows Randy? have another drink you might find it! lol! ;) just kidding! Try these two sites - they may tell you. I think you can do it anyway in PS7 by clicking on Select and then Transform Selection as Lyn suggested.
