Fractal critique needed

Could someone please help me understand where I went wrong with this image that garnered a c-index of 36? I realize that there are not a lot of members familiar with Apophysis, but I don't think it's necessarily pertinent to providing a constructive critique. Your time and consideration would be most appreciated!

Bangles & Baubles

Thanks in advance.

I am sorry to hear you received such an insanely low c-index on this! It is similar in many ways yet seems technically superior to this one that received an 85. The c-index seems to be a purely "first impression" kind of score. From that perspective what would the superficial first impression of someone looking at the small voting image be.

(trying to think in terms of someone who is not into fractals)

Over all it is kind of dark. It all looks the same - (mirror top to bottom and end to end). Orange / copper is not every body's favorite color. It is too complicated. too many litle parts I can't see in the small size. It looks like some kind of alien ray gun or something. I don't get it, what is it supposed to be?

Of course I love the image so none of these things natural come to my mind. In fact, The dark overall nature is what gives it it's luminance, The mirroring gives it it's shape, blue is more popular than orange but we cant make everything blue and we should not. The intricate details draw us in deeper. and as for what is it? Well it is art, and a very fine piece of art at that.

Well that did not help, did it? LoL

Looking at it now I have begun to notice the image leads the eye right out of the picture. My eye follows the center line left or right, right out of the frame. The center seems to be the focal point but any movement from there just points out of the picture and seems to give no where else to dwell.
I do not know how your software works or whether this is the whole thing or a cropped out portion of it, but If the left or right ( left and right ) edge became the center then all lines would point to the center and keep bringing the eye back into the image instead of pointing it out of the frame. Maybe try that and in blue and see what happens.

All that said: Some times the C-index simply does not make sense!

Hope this was of some help.

I think it is a shame that you got only 36 for such beautiful work. I am not a "fractal man" but I think it should have rated at about 70. Sometimes one just cannot fathom how people grade the images. Don't let that bother you, Lori - Just ignore it!

Hey DP, I really appreciate the time and consideration you have given to my plea. It definitely helps to hear how others perceive one's artwork, especially when the C-index doesn't make sense sometimes. Your thought process provides me with some things to think about, and it opens my eyes to hear what others see that I perhaps didn't see the first time around. Thank you for your thorough outline and quick response. I believe it will aid me in future creations. Many thanks DP! :)

I'm open to hearing thoughts from other members as well.

Lori, I can not do Apophysis fractals but I have experimented and understand how time consuming and difficult it is to create a good one.
I have viewed enough of them here to recognise a good one when I see one and there is no doubt in my mind that your Bangles and Baubles is a good one and deserving of a far higher score in my opinion.
Perhaps because the colours are very attractive to me it impresses me even more.
I for one will enjoy it on my desktop.
I agree with Raj - ignore the score :)

Lori, this is an image that I had 'marked' to return to for comment....weird how it is here!
I love the colors, the design. It is fascinating to look at..reminds me of a very fine, detailed copper bracelet. One that I would proudly wear!

Everything in this image here speaks loudly of warmth and richness and beauty to me.

I am not sure that there is any explanation for the c-index except the cross section of artists/viewers that got it in the voting booth ( you know it is a roll of the dice)!

Keep posting your beautiful works and let the numbers go sliding by.......I for one, enjoy everything you do and don't know diddly squat about fractals like this!

Thanks for sharing this with me :=)

Mimi, thank you for your kind appraisal and support. It's very much appreciated. I have been used to seeing low indexes, particularly on fractals. I just didn't expect this image to garner such a low one.

As I have never posted to this thread before, I didn't know what to expect. I'm pleased with all those that have given of their time to respond to my plea, as well as the wonderful comments. I guess I was looking for someone to come in and tell me what they didn't like..lol

Lori, just my two cents worth. I do not do fractals but I love art and I believe you to be an artist. Your images are rich with layers of thought and concept. I could look at your gallery for hours and not see all that there is to see. If you truly want someone to tell you what isn't liked, post something that is horrible. Until then, keep posting what you have for those of us who appreciate true art. ~~ John

Interesting.

Just compared the highest resolution size available, to that of the desktop size available for my monitor.

Some data seems to have gotten loss in the recompression along the way. Happens.

However, important data, where a flame like this is concerned. In particular, and if I have this right ... the luminance gets muddied up some ... resulting in an apparent lack of fine detail and focus.

Not the case for the largest size, though.

I ... love it. :o))

If one views the largest size, there is good good separation of the central portion. Brighter, colour is more intense, too.

It's definitely at the forefront to my eyes and more so, that of 'a focal point of interest' (don't wish to seem like I am disagreeing with David's assessement here ... just adding another set of eyes to the discussion, is all) to that of it's adjacent sides.

As well as, depth. Add in the 'texture' of the 'floor' and ceiling present?

Nice.

Sooooooo ... have fun choosing a gradient?

:oP

Wonderfully intricate, I could and would and will ... look at this one for a long, long time.

In summary and short ... 'the vagaries of the V.B.' ... reared their collective heads once more. Sorry that this time it happened to you, Lori.

If it makes you feel any better, watch my latest images' score emerge. The combination of fractal AND B & W?

Well, let's say I think I just might set a new 'record'. :oD

Hey Les, Many thanks for your kind words and thorough consideration you have given to my inquiry. I don't know...I fail to see any variance in the sizes myself, but I may try a different gradient to see how it plays out at a later time. Nevertheless, a sincere thank you for your added and respected opinion in reference to my image :)

As for your mention of b&w fractals... personally, I think there are not enough of them :P
