Here's the (slightly modified) laptop that I'm seriously considering [link]. It's a 12" ibook G4 with a custom cover by MacSkinz. I can get it for about $950 from my school. I'm mainly wanting to be able to sit outside (and in other places that aren't my office) and do work while at the university. Any thoughts or suggestions?
That cover looks incredible.
I've found that it's nice to be able to pull the machine out and do a little work, check some file, do a little typing, a short assignment, or some wireless surfing (especially caedes.net), but that for serious work, nothing beats being inside with a desk and mouse. So don't necessarily expect to sit on a park bench all day doing important work, it's harder, at least in my opinion. Plus, your lap gets really hot.
I don't know anything about the Macs, but many people around here like them, and some are fanatical about it. :) But if you haven't completely forsaken pc's, I'd reccommend IBM. My T40 is absolutely amazing, and my T20 was great 3 years ago, and has given me no trouble. Most schools can get a great discount on them, too.
Yeah it comes with the newest OSX, and I'd probably be dual booting with Gentoo Linux. =)
xentrik: I already have it planned out so that I can hook the laptop up to my big-boy monitor/keyboard/mouse when I'm at home. I was actually looking at the thinkpads as well since I like IBM and they actually support Linux on their products. I've looked at the price list for my school and the T40 is about $2000. That's a bit more than I want to spend. They do have an R40 in the $1000 ballpark, but it's not as small as the ibook.
"To the world you are just one person, but to just one person, you could mean the world" or " If you love someone, put their name in a circle, not a heart, because a heart can be broken but a circle can go on forever."
I have a 14 inch iBook and it is worth every penny I spent for it.
A great machine, and you should go for it. I have never had a crash or freeze on OS X , very stable and fast.
I got mine with just a CD-ROM instead of a DVD-R and used the money I saved from that to max out the RAM.
Last week I was pretty sure that I wanted the ibook, however now I'm looking at the powerbook too. At this rate I'll probably take so long that both will be discontinued. =)
I'm stuck between the 12 inch powerbook and 12 inch ibook. I'll mainly be using it for photoshop, email, websurfing, coding, and admin'ing my servers here and at work.
my pc monitor is a 20". 14" seams small, but it does make the laptop smaller too ;)
i have a compaq handheld and it small & lightweight nice but not very usefull.
I don't know. One of the things that I really liked about apple's products is that they were really small and not as expensive as other manufacturer's 'ultra-portables'. So it would kinda defeat the point to get anything but the smallest. I have 19" monitors at home and work that I can hook it up to when i want a larger screen. I would consider 14" except that the screen's resolution is still 1024x768. That's what I really care about, not the spacial size (I have good eyesight =).
Yeah, I think I'll probably go that route. Thanks for the input.
Offtopic: has anyone noticed how the google adwords banner on the bottom of this page is selling apple computers. Their spydering software seems to actually work!
i'm not sure that is the point. yes powerbook, like i the powerbook but is'nt the point elsewhere? price. if he has a bigger server or pc then the small afordablity is the issue. right? please, correct me if i'm wrong.
I think you're saying that because the powerbook supports monitor spanning, correct? Actually I've researched this a bit, and it turns out that the ibook can do the exact same thing with a small software tweak. So I'll still be able to run the ibook on my large monitor at 1280x960 just like I could with the powerbook.
I really like it so far. I had it delivered to my parent's house, so I had to wait untill just before xmass before I got it. I'm currently trying to get the website software running on it so I can develope for the website on it. That will make working on the site much easier.
