how do you pronounce caedes? i know its a mans name, but i tried looking it up anyway, just in case. is it "kay-dees", or "say-dees", or "seeds"... please help. i'd like to tell people about this site with more than a "yah, its a great site, its called cae..(cough)!
NOOOOOOOOO! PLease tell me it isnt so. I have been saying "Cay-Dis" AND that sounds way better. awww man! i dont care if im wrong, im going to keep saying Kay-Dis
I'm not sure of what it means in other languages, by in Latin it means carnage. I picked the name because I needed a cool, intelectual, and yet tough name to use while playing Unreal Tournement online.
caedês - fut ind act 2nd sg from caedo "to cut, hew, cut down, fell, cut off, cut to pieces; smiting, killing, slaughter, massacre, carnage, esp. in battle or by an assassin. Transf., persons slain; blood shed in slaughter or battle."
ah HAH! that sounds like a real, bonified definition to me. i looked in the new mw dictionary and couldn't find it.
so, it would appear that mr. harbingajoing could be described not only as a webmaster, but also a psychopathic assasin with a penchent for slaughter and bloodshed... interesting...
You're right about the dipthong (as in Caesar -- Ka-eye-zar), but the way you've spelled caedes phonetically (kayds) it pronounces like aids with a K in front.
How about just k-eye-dess?
*later, same day* check out this URL: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0059%3Aentry%3D%236011
I'm very confused now... isn't Caesar pronounced S-ee-zar? The way you've put it seems to me more like the Russian Kaiser... Like Kaiser Soze (or however it's spelt) in "The Usual Suspects"... Maybe theres a site where you can look up the word and you can hear it through the speakers? That way there could be no dispute. I did find one dictionary site that does this, but it had no listing for caedes (probably because it's Latin).
all i know is caedes was up there talking about his thong, and then he said...
"I hereby declare the correct pronuciation of the website to be <kayds>, however you can pronounce it in you own head however you like. ;-) "
so thats good enough for me. its his site, its his name on the door. if he wants me to call him veronica, i will. i like it here so i want to put down some roots and raise a family... :)
PRONOUNCE IT HOWEVER YOU WOULD LIKE, OK? The real pronounciation is............Kaids!! OK?! There ya go, i did it, and i always pronounced it right, i feel PROUD!!! Hehe. BYE!!
"To the world you are just one person, but to just one person, you could mean the world" or " If you love someone, put their name in a circle, not a heart, because a heart can be broken but a circle can go on forever."
*tbhockey protests as he finds his prununciation more apealling* PRONOUNCE IT HOWEVER YOU WOULD LIKE, OK? The real pronounciation is............KAY-DIS !! OK?! There ya go, i did it, and i always pronounced it right, i feel PROUD!!! Hehe. BYE!!
hmm i looked up caedes on a websters dictionary and got that it ment good to evil or something of the like but o well yes i am proud to call caedes my home and have watched the other "tennants" grow... its been fabulous being a part of this site =)

no. i'm jim. :) i think its kindof like caedes said, kayds. but i kind of like latin anyway.

Hay caedes, you play ut online???? when i went to orlando this last summer, i met the programmer who wrote it. he was from canada, and he was saying that he was going to start working on a online starwars game.
just thought i would say a little sumthin sumthin

Hmmm...well that's the dictionary definition. Does it tell us how to pronounce it? Nope.
I always thought it was 'kay-dees', but from what Caedes said, it may be 'kai-dees'. I'm lost.

OK, for anyone who cares, I've checked out a latin pronunciation web page (no, really).
'c' is always pronounced hard, as in 'k'.
'ae', as Caedes said, is pronounced 'ai', as in aisle.
the final 'e' is pronounced as in 'they'
the 's' is pronounced soft (not as in 'z')
So: Caedes is pronounced 'Kai-days'
(Samatar, I guess that means 'Caesar' is pronounced 'kai-ser' (and not 'kai-zer', or 'see-zer')how confusing).

i just don't like the fact that in captinhero's post threw 'sodimize' in as one of the definitions.... can we strike this from the post? :)
i just don't think we should go with 'sodimize' as a working definition.....
Hey, whatever....I just pasted it straight from the website.
You can remove it if you want (hell, I could edit it myself) but I really don't see what the big deal is. Personally, I think that 'sodomize' is the least offensive word in the definition (or are you saying that sodomy is somehow worse than murder, slaughter, assassination, blood. gore, etc?)

mr.H - if someone starts a forum topic and in the beginning its kinda funny and lighthearted and in the end people are shimmying under barbed wire with knives in their teeth, is there a good way to end it...?
i mean, i'm so used to being here now, i just automatically grunt instead of trying to pronounce the name of this place.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
whoa. i didn't mean to tick anyone off. it was meant to be funny.... (notice the smiley)
i just don't think caedes should be synonomous with sodomize, thats all. it was a joke. :) i'm not always serious and stuff. but i'm done, so... yeah. long live caedes, however you say it.
actually, i was just joking, too! you guys are WAY to serious! :P and, i hope this thread continues forever. its fun to see all the new and interesting ways to completely beat one word into the ground... i think in 6 months it will go something like
artist #1 - "well, i think caedes is pronounced like this, and here are some descriptive words i found to back up my theory..."
artist #2 - "YOU BASTARD!!!! start running, cuz i'm comin' after YOU!!! GGGRRRRRrrrrr!"
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
yeah. sodimize is a little over the top, unless you REALLY want to demoralize your enemy..... ughh... that should be a weapon in unreal tournament. 'the sodimizer' or something.... i don't think i'd like to design it though. or use it really....
and can i just say that i think synikol's holiday icon is the greatest adaptation of a regular icon to fit the season. i love it. good job.
(hows that for not even touching of the subject at hand? pretty good, eh? )
I agree with Sherpa- good job at adding some humor to this discussion Synikol!
I say: let's all just pronounce it however we want, cuz it sounds like you're all pretty stuborn about how you each say the stupid word- - I personally thought it was pronounced "sayds" and I'm going to keep pronouncing it that way cuz I like it- - - SO THERE!!!! :-}
first of all..... i appear to be the first poster for over a year, i wonder if i will get any responses...
2... ive been hooked with this website since my friend first showed it to me...
c) i prounounce it like "K-D's", however i dont thinks 3 letters does it justice, "kay-deez", but thats just me... i could try using "kayds" but it just doesnt sound right within the rules of the english language (in my own opinion)
Wow I havent seen this one around for awhile this was the original "how to pronounce Caedes" thread.... =D .... then there was this thread which has gone on forever How to pronounce Caedes

HAVE YOU THANKED YOUR CAEDES MODS LATELY?
It is too easy to whine when things go wrong and too hard to thank people for the things they do for you on site: just think about it....GIVE A MOD A HUG or even a GROPE today.....just do it....:)

And lol..no i really did miss this one. i do have something to say tho: i say sayds. Its more "fluid" without all the spit sound the Ka has. I think we should change it to "sayds."

Definitely Kay-diss... it's latin, right??? No, not THAT latin... I mean original roman type latin... which I took for 3 mind-bending years in HS... nothing like spending lots of time learning a 'dead' language... although it's so much more fun reviving a much flogged dead thread like this one...
Ok, this post went on WAY too long about a topic that only needed one answer from the website owner. Kaids it is. I used to say kay-dees... Caedes it is. :o)
