how can i develop imagination?

i know this sounds stupid, but...

you know the diff between the right and left sides of the brain, right? Well, i'm EXTREMELY left hemisphere dominant. it seems like as long as i'm dealing with straight lines and symmetry, i can excel. for example, i could draw you a blue print of the titannic and it would be beautiful. (no smudges, i might add...) but i could never draw a free hand sketch of, say, my thumb. so i'm unhappy with my art because i feel it lacks imagination. please help me to become a right-hemisphere dominant, art superhero like yourselves.

thanks in advance.

Theres no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people asking questions.

Not that I am an "art superhero", but I think music is good inspiration... listen to it with your eyes closed and let your mind draw images... I can tell you what inspires me if you like.

If that doesn't work you will just have to start using mind bending drugs... :-)

you know, thats pretty good. not the drugs... the music! theres another art site i used to frequent, and one of the artists would list the songs they were listening to along with the software or techniques used. i always thought that was really pretty neat.

that's what I do. I always listen to music while I create. For instance...right now..I'm listening to O' Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Music def helps me quite a bit. It sets the mood for my pieces. As far as being creative and thinking outside the lines...do just that. think outside the lines. Don't try to mimic something in your drawing. It's much more fun and filled with emotion most often when you explore. Picasso....there you go.

Very few people (including myself) can just create art without any 'preparation'. You must first learn the underlying skills to be able to express the ideas that come from within. For example I playing the trumpet is an artistic pursuit, however VERY few people can just pick up a trumpet and make music without first studying the mechanics of trumpet playing for many years. Before one can create poetry one must first master the structure of the underlying language.

Many more people posses the creativity to create art than posses the skills to effectively communicate that creativity. So perhapse you really just need to work on aquiring the nessesary skills?

i totally agree with that. i use photoshop for the simplist things and yet i believe that most aspects of the artwork i really like were done in PS. if i knew more about how to duplicate those effects, it follows that i would be led to create my own.

unless i'm a compete stump. which is possible. but seriously, thanks for the input everyone, its much appreciated.
