This may have already been a discussion. I'm not sure. Looking through those listed on this link I'm not seeing one, so I'd like to see what members think of a gallery dealing with serious photographic images. There are a lot of beautiful images on this site but life isn't always beautiful, too often just the opposite. I'm not talking about submitting questionable images of violent death, or sex, or other images that might be very objectionable to some people. Right now I'm submitting what is basically a tour of a nuclear missile control facility from our Cold War days. There are no shots in it that could be considered "wallpaper," necessarily, or any that could be termed objectionable (drab, yes, but not objectionable), but it's a subject that many of us have known about, and have had hanging over our heads for years, and from the comments I'm getting, is something that most people have never been privy to. Those commenting are very appreciative of the series. The gallery I'm submitting these shots to is architecture, the only one that seemed appropriate. Photojournalism promotes education and involvement in our world. It's an important part of our craft. If there can be a gallery for pets on the Caedes site, I think there should be one for photojournalism. If it wasn't important and popular among a large segment of the population, magazines like Life and National Geographic would not have had the success they did. What do you think? Over time I have seen positive changes in the Caedes site and I think this has the potential of being one, too.
Sign me up Nik. I have posted many shots that I would have appreciated a photojournalism category. We have an opportunity here to share news and photos with people all over the world. I think it would be very educational.
This is one that needed the photojournalism category.
YES, YES, YES!
I really hope Caedes will meet your challenge and get this photojournalism gallery rolling.
I for one will surely post some photos!
Paul
That's a good idea which basically and surely will have my support, but at the same time I believe we have to brainstorm to understand exactly matter of the subject.
For instance: there are many subtypes of photo journalism based on pictures taken during a political campaign, general still life facts, slums living status, natural disaster (an earthquake may be an example), images of war and sports: in a nutshell it's a matter of vast entries.
Should we define exactly what we'd like to include and to exclude?
ed.
Definition is the most difficult part of creating a gallery like this. Personally I think the most important role of a gallery is making it as easy as possible for people to find the images they are looking for. A gallery like "Photojournalism" might tend to make the task of deciding where images should go more difficult IMO because there could be many different types of genre mixed into one gallery. It would work better if images could be tagged so that they could remain in their original gallery but also appear in photojournalism (the way the "contest" gallery works now) however this will take more work to implement.
A good idea that needs to be discussed with Caedes and yes the photos would need to be in individual folders for that type of journalism. A great idea.
I too have posted shots that were more suited to photojournalism. My shots from the Kansas Cosmosphere really weren't suited for desktops. Add another vote to the journalism folder!
For in and out, above, about, below,
'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,
Play'd in a Box whose Candle is the Sun,
Round which we Phantom Figures come and go.

... And another vote! I believe if there was a dedicated category/sub-category for such images, it would make it easier for those looking for something a bit out of the ordinary as well being a very informative addition to the site.
I agree, Nik! I have a number of shots that I would say are "slice of life"...wash hanging out on a back line, for example. I have not posted most such shots, mainly because they weren't up to Caedes technical standards (as far as I understand such). However, I have posted two recently and had no appropriate category that really suited them. To my mind, "Photojournalism" tells a story. It isn't so much pictures of ugly things as it is shots that explain a way of life. One person on Caedes posted a shot of a young man with his arm around his grandmother. There was a universal feeling to it that would be telling a universal story. I know that a description of what really is (and is not) photojournalism would be difficult. But I hope, not TOO difficult!
Sorry I didn't see this sooner but I'm totally on board with it - if I ever had time to get to Caedes anymore! What I love about this site compared to others is (a)it's decent [no questionable subjects or images] (b)relationships (c)diversity of categories and (d)those who are willing to invest some thought and consideration into critique. I hope something comes of this even if I am three months late in commenting... anne :-)
Tell me if you like it or don't but be sure to tell me why! I promise to always give honest and sincere (albeit gentle when necessary) critiques. MY NEW YEARS TIP for all, go have some fun with your new gear you got for Christmas. Do some things you rarely or never do. If you always shoot scenics, go shoot macros (or as close up as you can get.) Practice on different subjects, try new lighting techniques, bracket your shots (shoot the same image at different exposures and different apertures), get down low and shoot from your back, your belly, and your knees. Bend, twist, lean and climb up on things. Shoot toward the sky (carefully - blown out sunlight is NOT attractive :-) Just do something different and amaze yourself then share with us :-) Love you Caedians.
