B&W effects in photoshop

hey all, I wanted to take some pics of my trumpet with it's gold mouthpiece and make everything but the mouthpiece b&w, i was wondering if that's possible, and/or how would i go about doing it. thanks in advance for the help!

There are several different ways to accomplish this task. I would normally create a copy of the layer (Ctrl+J). Desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U) the new layer on top of the background layer. Then apply a mask (Layer>Add layer mask>Reveal all) to the desaturated layer. With the mask layer selected, and black as the foreground color, paint a mask (paintbrush tool) over the mouthpiece to reveal the layer below.
