My dad and I, are planning a trip to America next year. We want to fly to New York, buy a cheap car, travel around the US for 3 months, winding up in San Francisco. We don't have a US address and only UK drivers licences and wonder if anybody knows how we could get auto insurance?
Also, can anyone recommend any local beauty spots?
Go to NY, find Rt 1 (its a small highway) that runs all the way from Maine to Key West Florida - the entire eastern coast of the US. That could take between 2 days and 2 weeks, depending on how many stops you make...
The loop through the four corners area (New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona), including Santa Fe and Taos, Durango and Ouray, Zion National Park and Sedona. You can then go to Las Vegas and rest before heading out to California and the Pacific Coast Highway (#1, not #101) from San Diego to San Francisco and beyond into the wine country.
Insurance is an option with car rental, but I think they are looking to buy a car. Although I'm not sure what you consider a cheap car, but that may leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere! :)
I would say what you want to see is all in what you are interested in. The grand canyon is quite popular, and the florida keys are as well, i would also say new orleans. Tony said to avoid Moore County but if you like golf it is a cool place to visit. I would say a stop in Washington DC is great for history, i could spend a good week there inside the smithsonian museum if i had the time. any way good luck and have fun here
