Illustrations Gallery

I know I'm being finicky, but could the Illustrations Gallery be destroyed and out of its ashes be created the Digital Art and Traditional Art galleries? (a bit dramatic?) These galleries could have subcategories such as "drawings" and "fantasy"...

The reasoning is that technically illustrations (things that explain other things) alludes to children's books or magazines, etc., and most of what I see in the current gallery aren't illustrations.

(Also, the Computer gallery could be placed under the umbrella of Digital Art)

Bethany, I like this idea. I have felt for some time now that there was not a good gallerie for "Art." Best wishes in getting this achieved.

Yes. You're right on target. Yes.

I feel that "Digital art" and "Computer" would be confusing for browsers... they sound like pretty much the same thing.

Well, if "Computer" would be discarded as a category, is what I was trying to say with the last bit. The categories "3D", "Landscapes", and "Space" would simply be left as is, but under the category of "Digital Art" along with "Paintings" (for work done in Photoshop, for example)... basically this is how I would picture the gallery subcategorized:

Digital Art:
1. 3D
2. Landscape
3. Space
4. Fantasy
5. Paintings/Drawings
6. Photomanipulations
7. Abstract

The reason I've added the last two is because photomanipulations are technically digital artworks, and most of the abstract art posted are fractals or computer based images. The Traditional Art gallery would break down similarly:

Traditional Art:
1. Drawings
-1a. People
-1b. Landscapes
-1c. Abstract
(etc.)
2. Paintings
-2a. People
-2b. Landscapes
-2c. Abstract
3. Mixed Media (for things like collages)
4. Sculpture/Ceramics
5. Other (for things like printmaking, or other less common fields)

Obviously they could be modified as per the mods discernment, and yes "Digital" and "Computer" would be a bit redundant :)

Sounds reasonable. I'll move this to the feature bloat forum.

However sub-sub categories (1a etc) are not possible with the current system (I don't think there enough illustrations to need them yet in any case).

Scratch that. It seems I am unable to move discussions any more...

I understand that the subcategories would take some additional scripting for the site, but if the change takes place, perhaps they could be placed into the upload description?

Note: If this were to happen, I think that there would need to be a disclaimer noting that the gallery would only be for originally created works, not photos of others' work. I thought I should just mention that since there's already a Photography->Sculpture category.

I suggested adding subcategories several years ago but since it hasn't happened I take it caedes doesn't consider it a priority (or maybe he doesn't want them).

Edit to the previous: "if the change DOES NOT take place"

sorry for that...

Well, I could understand him not wanting to do it a few years ago since the site wasn't as large, but I think subcategories might actually (bunny trail) bring more members/artists to the site (organization makes me feel more at ease, at least).
