Problem with contest submissions.

Copied and pasted:

"Yesterday when the 'doors' contest still had some time to run the ‘enter the contest’ link disappeared and did not allow me to put a photograph into the contest. I am not too worried about it being there, but maybe the system needs to be checked to ensure that the link remains there."

Original discussion thread found under the "Contests" forums ... "Where did the link go?".

Thoughts, again copied and pasted:

" ... my initial thoughts were that the link ('enter the contest') was not showing up for you ... due to the fact that your image/photo might have been in the approval queue and had not yet been approved.

Referencing the time frame/window that you were logged on after posting/uploading, or even afterwards and had checked back at some point.

Not that of the time left to enter the contest, to be clear.

Seems to me that this is a bug of sorts. To my mind, as long as an image has been posted/uploaded while there was time left to do so for a contest ... that said image is still eligible for submission.

It just might necessitate the member coming back after posting/uploading ... then, once it has in fact been approved ... submitting it at this later point in time."

thanks Les - I was just puzzled by it all and getting a little frustrated as I had spent a few hours working on my image and then the link to enter it was not visible. In future, I will make sure I post an image earlier if there is a glitch when posting towards the end of the final submission time. It is against my nature to be late ...I am usually early - so lesson learned! ;)

It used to be you could submit your image as soon as it was posted, but now you have to wait for it to be approved. That's a problem if the mods can't be counted on to approve images in a timely manner.
I uploaded my entry as soon as I got to work Tuesday (since I'm currently without an internet connection at home and it was a long weekend). It was just barely approved in time for me to submit it before leaving work almost 9 hours later, 3 hours before the contest closed. I was getting worried there!

As long as the timestamp of any posting/uploading is recognized by the system ... 'timely manner' will not be a factor.

The image is not available to submit until approved.
An image can't be submitted once the contest closes. Once the submission box disappears.
So if it isn't approved before the contest closes, it can't be submitted.

If the site's code recognizes the 'timestamp' ... it would not be problematic.

Perhaps, a bug or a glitch in Patti's situation.

Or, an oversight with respect to the site's coding. Then ...

If it doesn't? (Recognize the timestamp, that is ...)

Ergo, this posting to this forum.

I'm running out of ways to state this.

There's a box, with a drop-down menu listing your images eligible for submission.

Images don't appear on that list until approved by a moderator.

The box disappears when the contest closes.

Ergo, nothing can be submitted until it's approved by a moderator, no matter when it was posted. Because it's not there on the list.

Please tell me if I have any of these facts wrong. Otherwise it just seems like we're talking right past each other. I don't see what the timestamp has to do with it once the contest is closed.

Hannah, I understood you the first ... two times. :oP

Ok, simply put ... then a change in the site's code is needed, such that the timestamp of posting becomes the paramount factor in these situations.

Not that of the actual approval time.

I thought you meant the bug was with her computer. If it's a site problem, it seems odd that it would have become an issue just recently, without any other noticeable changes in the contests. I don't remember when it changed, but several contests ago. I assumed the change was intentional, that maybe people were submitting images that were later rejected by the mods.

Or maybe I'm still misunderstanding and it was intentional. I don't know, I give up.

Either way it is a problem. I didn't say anything when I first noticed it because I really don't like to complain, at least out loud. But if it was meant to solve one problem, it created another.

I understand the source of the problem, and I'll be thinking of a way to possibly fix it. Thanks.

Might have occurred once more. From the current contest topic poll discussion thread (re: "Colours of Nature" contest):

The image in question was put into the "Contests->Current Contest" gallery. This is not the correct way to enter a contest. To enter a contest, you must go to the contest page and choose the image from the drop-down menu.

For those that were unable to post an image to the current contest due to it not being approved in time.

And..

He must have gotten distracted ...

The problem with submitting images before they're approved is that they won't be visible to vote on. I don't know the solution for that, but it would help if one of the mods would make a mental (or physical) note to check for new images shortly before the deadline. It's only every 2 weeks or so ...

With the long periods of time to enter contests, the mental note could also be beared by the artists.

If you do any kind of CG work it can take a long time to render - mine took from the night of Wednesday the 21st to the morning of Wednesday the 28th. The deadline needs to be the deadline.
