I just wanted to point out that I've re-configured the list of top new images on the main page. It used to pick images uploaded in the last 2 weeks. Now it only picks images from the last 4 days. This should allow more images to appear there and avoid a situation where an image gets 1500 page views in a week.

Very cool...I have noticed that the list seems to be changing more frequently! Hope this works well :) Thanks for taking the time, Caedes!

But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think and smile. Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through a creative mind.

I'm curious as to if there will be small thumbnails for top new images in the future implementation of the site. i think this would be a cure to the "Top New Images Curse"

Excellent idea. This gives us ameutures a chance on the days when the pros get lazy. :-)

What do you think about configuring the "Top Images", to prevent voting on those images? This would prevent the hit that we all take on our images when they go onto the front page. It's really not right that an image gets slaughtered (pun intended) when it's chosen to be representative of the whole site.

I believe the phenomenon (whew! - big word) happens, because people who aren't interested in that type of art see the image, and feel inclined to render their opinions. Our images wind up being exposed to a lot of people who wouldn't ordinarily see (and therefore vote on) them.

its not slaughtered cause of voting. We've had a discussion about this and concluded that its slaughtered because of view/download ratio. Normally you would be able to see a thumbnail of an image and decide whether u want to see the preview, then decide if you want to download the full size. With top new images you only get to see the title of the image. So people click on the image even if its not their flavor because they have no idea what to expect. This leads to alot more people who open the preview and dont view the full size. This could be prevented by showing thumbnails of all of the top new images on the front page (smaller than the featured image thumb tho) that way people can decide ahead of time whether the image is worth clicking on to begin with. That idea was presented in several layouts for the new site and will probably be implemented in the next caedes version.

Great explanantion, noob. I always thought it was a voting issue, but I can see what you're saying must be true. One way or another we have to come up with a way to limit the damage from being "discovered" in this way. I'm betting that at least two of my images that were "featured" are going to wind up being deleted because they took such big hits from being top new images.

Remember that images are not automatically deleted for low c-index, it's basically used by the mods as a popularity guide. Awesome shots with low c-index often stick around. By the same token, common pics with high c-index may fall under the axe. Recall the "spring cleaning" during which the curtain fell on many "sunset" and "flower" images.
