Advice Welcome

I feel like asking for any advice on any of my work. I've learned a lot since I came here, but now I feel like I've hit a plateau in my work because I can't get anyone to tell what's wrong with my images or how to fix them.

Does anyone here know anything about Terragen? I've put up 5 images, 3 of them I specifically asked for advice, but haven't gotten anything.

Fire and Ice
Loch Caedes
Misty Mountains Cold
Lost Marble
Secret Spring

Anyone?

I haven't used TG for some time, but I'll see if I can remember anything useful when I am not on my phone. Habe you checked to see if there is anything in "tutorials"?

The problem (not just with Terragen) is that, as the creator, I can't always tell what faults other people might see. The faults that I do see, no else comments on, much less tell me how to fix them!
No, there don't seem to be any tutorials on Caedes. I've been through the ones on the PlanetSide site.

It may be that most of the computer artists really have left, but I don't get much advice on my other work either. The "Positive Comments Only" epidemic is taking its toll!

Hannah, I can not give any advice as such becuse I know nothing about the program.
I have viewed your 5 links and enjoyed all of them.
Secret Spring - love the design and the way the reflection balances the image. I feel it, and Fire & Ice and Loch Caedes would benefit from a boost in the colours to make them more arresting and dramatic.
Misty Mountain Cold looks fine the way it is and I am running away with the Lost Marble as I am short of a few :)
The Lost Marble, to my eye, has the impact and oomph the others slightly lack.
Very inexpert opinions !
I had a look at the Terragen Official Users Guide and it boggled my mind.
There is a list of other tutorials here

One thing to remember with TG is that the same rules really apply to CG landscapes as do photographic ones. The rule of thirds comes to mind when I glance at some of those you linked to (eg aim for 1/3 land 2/3 sky, position the sun in the left or right third of the screen). Also try to master the basics before worrying about "fancy" stuff.

Ok advice left... just remember you were the one who asked for it! ;-)

Thank you!
I suppose you can have the marble, LynEve, since no one else has claimed it!
I have had trouble with the renders looking "washed out", but that's one of the things no one else ever seemed to notice. I can correct that in PSP, but I'd like to get it right to begin with.
I'll try to keep the "rule of thirds" in mind.

From memory I think I almost always post processed my TG renders in photoshop.

Circular Reasoning
or
Distant Land
or
Cold Comfort
anyone?

The last two were obviously unpopular, but nobody has told me why.

Cold comfort: simply because it is monochrome. The VB is all about vibrant color and emotive views.

Distant Land: The water and the mountains look to be made of the same texture. Makes it seem unintentionally unnatural. The horizon also looks tilted to the right.

Circular Reasoning: Is beautiful to me :)

Hope that's helpful.

I hadn't noticed the horizon (I was more concerned that it not appear to drop off too abruptly), but now that you mention it it does look a little crooked.

I hadn't expected "Cold Comfort" to be highly popular, but other monochrome images haven't fared that badly. I guess I probably won't know unless someone who voted low tells me why.

I think maybe 'Cold Comfort' comes off as being a bit harsh/stark because it's only in black and white. I think knowing you were trying a 'no grey' approach tempers my view of it since that's a hard task and you achieved it well. Without that knowledge though, I would find it a bit too stark for my taste.

Beneath the Emerald Sea

I made this on my old computer, and on my new one it looks a bit bright. Not as much after I calibrated my monitor (as well as I could, I can't afford anything high-tech).
So I'd like to know how it looks on other monitors. I know they're all a bit different, but I'd like to know if mine is brighter than most or if it's the picture that's too bright.

It looks pretty good to me... certainly better than other ho-hum, poor quality fractals, and this has a much lower score than some of those. I'd say ignore the c-index in this case.

Thank you. The C-Index is annoying, but I also want to figure out if my monitor is calibrated well enough. I have another Vue render that's fairly dark, and I don't want it to be hard to see if I post it.

The only thing I can notice is that I think the contrast could be higher in places, but I doubt that has anything to do with the site and is probably just your personal preference.
