... 'you' nominated an image for promotion via the Art Council that did not originate from your own Friend's List?

Yesterday, perhaps day before. It had a high c index, almost 100 views, and a fair amount of praise. A very fine image. Yet not one of those ~100 viewers thought to put it forth to the CAC. Odd. And sad.

It was a happy moment, then, when I saw it made it into the perms.

I don't have a "friends" list. I haven't actually nominated too many images. I prefer computer art, and there's not much of it anymore :-(

About 10 minutes ago.

I never use my friends list to select nominations.
I regularly browse New Images simply to view them and that is where I select nominations from. Sometimes it happens that they are also on my friends list.

Like third_eye often I am also surprised that high scoring highly viewed images have not been selected but I tend to disregard view numbers - visitors to the site are included and they can not nominate. I suspect that very many highly scored images in the 80's and even 90's have also been overlooked but I am not sure if that is because of inflated scores or because they have just not been noticed.
One of the reasons I prefer to nominate early (which I know some disagree with) is so that I will not be swayed by a c-index - and can rely solely on my own judgement.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Les, I have nominated about a half-dozen over the past couple months. One was that of a friend but I nominated it because it was exceptional, not because a friend took the photo. A couple of them were older than 1 year, a couple were new. No amount of discussion is going to change the fact that some people will nominate their friends' work and some will not unless it merits the nomination. Some of us respect the idea behind the Art Council and some do not. People will do what they will do and I feel quite certain that the people who would read this thread and respond to it are those of us who try to do the right thing, to be responsible for our own actions. If you're looking for someone to confess that they use the AC to boost their buddies, I'm afraid you're going to have a long wait. I actually don't see a point to this thread other than to give folks another dead horse to pound into paté. Isn't there something else worth discussing, something other than the Art Council? Wasn't there a thread about this very thing put to bed, not too long ago, after hundreds of comments that degenerated into anger from different directions? Isn't this site better than that? Aren't we better than that? I gave up commenting on that past thread long ago, when I saw where it was going and that it wasn't going to accomplish anything. How about if we put this horse in the fridge while it still looks like a horse, Les, okay? There are so many other things we could talk about. Like Kiva. You could ask folks on that thread what their personal experiences and thoughts on that subject are, because I sense you had an interest there. Just a thought.

If you've ever wanted to make a difference but found it hard to believe that one person could... check out the Kiva Team Caedes discussion thread and discover that anything is possible.

Thanks to all who have contributed thus far.

Appreciate your collective time. :o)

And yes, there is a method behind my posting madness, Nik.

However, it is not as transparent as one might think;

"If you're looking for someone to confess that they use the AC to boost their buddies, I'm afraid you're going to have a long wait. I actually don't see a point to this thread other than to give folks another dead horse to pound into paté.."

/\ That's just silly. :oP

With one or two exceptions early in the process all my nominations have been from my non-friends list, all those complete strangers out there posting good quality images. I prefer to dig from the back of the new images gallery to hopefully catch some rare gem the early promoters passed over.

Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn't go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick. Henri Cartier-Bresson

Two days ago and before that a couple of weeks ago. Does it matter?

This is probably going to come off as sounding/reading harsh..

"I am beginning to think that people don't really look at the images they vote on anyway, so what does the VB or the AC matter? I see images in the main galleries that are overly sharpened, poorly composed, blurry and over saturated as examples. Granted many of the images are of fine quality, but discrimination has been lacking in the choice of subjects and quality. The main galleries are becoming very bland."

To answer your question above, Cindy ... yes, it does matter.

And since I am ... ahem ... here, some more food for thought for the Art Council members that will hopefully be addressed/internalized. By either the awareness that this thread discussion may bring to light, or by implementing a suggestion that was made here:

"Idea to prevent multiple promotions"

/\ Going to quote the entire first post from this discussion thread;

"Just had a thought today; when an image comes up in ones "Jobs" list for promotions, perhaps any recent images by that same artist that have already been promoted could be displayed beside it; or just a link which reads, "Recent promoted images by this artist". That way everyone would have a quick reference to make sure that similar images hadn't already been promoted."

Today actually. I'd suggessated a couple another time but I don't remember when. I didn't look at the c-index of either one, because I could care less about the numbers, & one I'd seen earlier through the voting the voting booth. Also, as to the praise given to nominated pics?

Oh I'll be honest here, I did quickly scans the first comment, heck I'm as nosy as the next guy..:oD, but it didn't affect my nominating the picture in any way.

If that counts.
