Does anyone know if it is possible for me to download some sort of xp add-on that will allow me to view raw files in the picture viewer that is built into windows. That way i can preview my raw files before i open them up in an editing software. I haven't had a chance to look yet, but i thought i would start here.
Thanks guys.

To my knowledge there are no such plug-ins or programs that allow for that. You should be able to preview them anyway. I know with the 1D, I can set the camera to write a small, medium, or large jpeg and the raw file for easy previewing and/or immediate image use without having to convert the raw files or extract any jpegs. I believe the 10D, D. Rebel, and most of Nikon's digitals do a similar thing, where it's imbedded in the raw file, so extraction is necessary.
Some cameras come with software to view & convert RAW files.... Check the company's site that made your camera. Also you can also check out a freebie at picasa.com
DpMagic have a freeware product called "dpMagic Community" that allows thumbnail previews and common tasks previews from 140 cameras.
They also have a $10 product called "dpMagic Plus" that has more features like slideshows, histograms and more.
Alright. I Already have a program i can open them up in but i was looking for a plug into windows. Ill take a look around the web, but I'm doubtfull i will be able to find one. I guess i will have to just convert them all to jpg and view them that way to figure out which ones i want to do more with until i get a bigger card where i just get the camera to save both. With a 128 card i only get 11 raws on there, so adding the jpgs aswell isn't a very good thing.

just use the raw+basic option, raws are about 12-15 times the file size of a basic jpg, so saving both would only affect the amount you can save by one, so if you're too lazy to just batch them all that would work
Unless it was you who started that thread as well, check this dpreview thread out. This may be what you're looking for. (I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know for certain how well/if it works.)
that looks great, however, milos looking for a nikon .nef, not the cannon .crw files. is there one like that for the d70? also would that be faster than opening them in say nikon capture?
Oops, yea, sorry about that. The only thing I know about it is that I stumbled across that thread the other day and I knew someone here was looking for what that sounded like it was describing. Didn't think about canon vs. nikon... So I guess it can be done, the question is finding one for your needs.
Actually DpMagic is a plugin for windows. It extends the capabilities of the built in windows folder views, so raw files can be viewed as thumbnails when you look through your folders just like jpg's and bmp's.
I'm not nessasarly looking for something that will let me see the thumbnails as i can already do that. What i want is to be able to see them when you are in the filmstrip view in windows explorer. It then allows you to see them close to moniter size without really opening them and eating all the ram on my computer.
