Earthquake - bad

Another major earthquake has hit Christchurch NZ today - loads of damage and there are fatalities.
Where I live further south I have felt two - and I am scared out of my wits even with these minor ones. The ground has stopped shaking but I have not.
The phones are out and there are many people trying to contact families there.
My own family was out of town attending a funeral but are now on their way home hoping their house is ok.

I had just asked Mimi and Cindy if they had heard from you and then I thought to go to your gallery and see when you last checked in and then I thought to check the discussion board and found you there. Thank heavens you are OK. I thought you were from Christchurch but I see you are not. Earthquakes are not funny. When I drove a truck, I happened to be in California for everyone of their major earthquakes (Los Angeles and San Francisco. Went thru a couple in Japan also. One is completely helpless. Rest assured I will be praying for your continued safety. Please keep us posted. Pat

Thanks Pat - we are fine hee - still feeling shakes but far enough away not to be damaging - only the nerves are affected :)

Helicopters are attempting to put out fires as roads are impassible, some roads are flooded. There are signs in windows of CBD buildingsa saying 'Help' and the number of casualties is rising.
The phones are still out and the mobile network overloaded so there are many anxious families separated.
The beautiful Christchurch Cathedral is in ruins.

No we are far enough away - all the wall pictures are lopsided but that is the only sign anything has happened here.
I was just about to start my lunch in a cafe when the first one struck - sorta took the appetite away - all the lights swinging!

My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones up in Christchurch.
There are people unable to return to their homes from work because bridges are out. I am tryng to contact a couple of friends but until the phones come back will have to wait.

My ISP is located there so guess I am lucky to still be on line.

Oh my! Pat alerted me to the earthquake and then she had the good sense to check here. I am so glad to hear that you are all right! I tried to calculate your distance from Christchurch and came up with about 160 miles south. I can imagine that you must be having aftershocks. I've never experienced an earthquake, but I am glad for that and hope that you will not be affected very dramatically by what has happened. Hoping to hear how things are going and that your lines stay open to keep contact with us here. God bless you and all that have experienced this terrible disaster. You're in my thoughts. Cindy

The official death toll is now 65 but it will be far far greater than that.

Please please spare a prayer or a thought for the 30 people still trapped in one collapsed building and the brave rescue people attempting to reach them while each hour there is another after shock.
The scenes I have just watched on TV are horrific.

The devastation of the cathedral is even worse now that we know that there were people in the tower when it fell.

The city has run out of ambulances and civilians are helping with 4WD vehicles to get the injured to hospitals or triage centres. . hospitals in other areas are making room for the overflow.

Thank you folks for your concern here and via pm and email. You are proof that the caedes community spirit is alive and well and I appreciate your thoughts deeply.

Guess you wil have seen on TV what is happening. 10 hours gone and still 100's unaccounted for and still trapped under collapsed buildings. Rescuers now working in the dark cold and heavy rain and a bleak night for many without homes or unable to get to them. Official death toll is 64 but expected to rise dramatically by tomorrow.
Significant aftershocks hourly - last one about half an hour ago and lots of little tremors in between.
I dont expect to sleep much tonight - but have nothing to complain about, and my family is safe - please pray for those affected.

Thankful to hear you're ok. I was having a panic attack as part of my family are over in NZ but have heard they're on the North Island so panic is mainly over there... however of course there are so many affected that it's hardly consoling. Keep us as updated as possible, I'll be watching the live feed all night, and sending all the love possible down these fibre-optic cables. xx

We as artists look upon the world in many different languages. There are those of us who see sadness, pain, suffering. But if we do not occasionally look and see that there is love and laughter, what's the point of looking at all?

Gemmma & Lauren - thanks.
The full impact of the extent of the tragedy is becoming more apparent as time goes on and the word 'rescue' is being replaced with 'recovery'. For the first time in our history we have a National State of Emergency.
Every person I have come in contact with today has a story of family or friends to tell - some good, some tragic. The bravery of the rescuers is incredible, working in collapsed buildings while the ground still shakes. They are heroes one and all.

I was just reading about it, about Lyttelton actually and about how scary it was for the residents in particular the children. Though the little success stories are heartening, I agree with you Lyn, the terror will be felt for a long time.
