New Voting on a Previous Submission

We now have the ability to open a previously submitted image for further voting. For those members who put a lot of stock in the c-index, and take advantage of this feature, you need to be aware of something. By asking for more votes on your submission, you may be just as likely to end up with a lower than a higher c-index. I did this with my highest-rated image, that had an 89 c-index, hoping to finally break the 90 barrier. It now has an 86. I won't be doing that again.

Kind of struggling to see where the value lies in doing this as well, Nik.

At first.. I simply thought it was a way to allow members who had forgotten to 'tick' the box that would enable voting on their images. To go back and do so, if desired.

Pure and simple.

And made sense to me, given the number of times this had occurred with various members.

A re-vote though?

Agree with you that this option comes with a caveat emptor, as you may have just found out.

And..

Depending on how soon, one puts an image back into the Voting Booth ... may run into some voter apathy. Insofar as some may have seen the image before and are not suitably impressed with having to vote once again.

Happens.

Particularly where reworks are concerned.

I just discovered zeros on several images I uploaded a couple of years ago. I'd put them back in the booth just to see what kind of response they'd get now. More a way of testing the temperature of the site than anything else. Cept my brain is teeming with the desire to get some of the projects I haven't had/made time for out of my fingers now and I'd rather go do those. 8•)

I third that motion.

Here's to new creativity, as opposed to traveling down old paths!

Mind you, I had the same thought, Cat.

Test the creative temperament of the current membership on an 'old' (read; 'years ... not days, weeks, months') image might be interesting.

I put one of my not-too-old images back in when I noticed that it had only 14 votes, and that's not really enough for a "stable" C-Index. I think the new number is 2 higher than the old.
I hadn't thought of it before, but it might be interesting to occasionally put older images in just to see how tastes have changed. And my first image has 14 votes too ...

That of.. 'tongue-in-cheek'.

Comes in handy too, when trying to trace the paths, or "songlines", that their people's ceremonials ancestors took.. and ... in appealing to the CI gods.

LOL. Reminds me... a few weeks ago I asked someone why 'curiosity' tends to be regarded as a positive thing, and she said "is it?" ;-)

Jacqueline;

The purpose of this thread was not drama, not a rant, just a heads-up to members who haven't yet used the feature, but since any concern with the Caedes site is interpreted as whining, perhaps the membership would be best served by the mods moving this one to the graveyard now? All in favor, say aye.

I make a motion that no mod has said anything discouraging or disparaging about the original point of this thread, and it has not (quite) yet descended into people sniping at each other and that there is no need to move it to the graveyard... yet. If that wasn't subtle enough, let me try it this way HINT HINT 8•P

All hands?

Oy vey! My only mention of a mod was that it might be best if one of them killed this thread before it degenerated further, and not that anything disparaging came from a mod. Why is it so difficult for folks to interpret plain text, instead of reading their own interpretations into it?

I repeat: The purpose of this thread is a heads-up to members who haven't yet used the re-vote feature. That it may not give them the result they were hoping for. That's it. No deep antagonistic meaning here, folks. Just a heads-up. Nothing less (no, not Les) - Nothing more. Let's leave it at that and get on with life. Sheesh!

My apologies on the mention of mods - I misunderstood. The rest stands as a simple "no sniping please". So... no need to get so frustrated s'il vous plait. Here, may I interest you in a red velvet cupcake? Or a water balloon to toss? 8•P

Is it kosher to throw cupcakes? If that's the criteria I'd rather it were a banana cream pie... it makes a better splash (and using coconut cream would just be sacrilegious).

Hmmmm *check's the manual*

It says for kosher purposes you should throw salt from your right hand over your left shoulder.

Personally, I prefer the π. Nothing is sacrilegious. If it lands on my face, I'm licking it off, so I still get to have it. And then no one can accuse you of a-salt. 8•P

To rephrase the original post:

If you put your image back in the voting booth, there is a possibility that your C-Index will end up LOWER, or HIGHER, or just the SAME. Anyone expecting some other outcome will be lined up against the wall and shot with his or her pie of choice.

I would certainly be reluctant to put any of my older images (over a few years old) back in the voting booth as I think the overall standard expected, here and on the web in general, has increased quite rapidly. In any case I have always been more interested in feedback/ratings of my most recent uploads as I feel like I already know the general feeling about anything that has already received a score, a few points either way doesn't really provide me with any "new data".

NIK.. i wasn't saying that this thread was a rant or whine.. it's been a good discussion..

i was just stating that from previous experience there will be ranting and whining over it in the very near future.. you know yourself how out of hand it gets over voting, c-index etc

A new thought on the subject; if you put up a previously voted upon picture, will you run the risk of having some of the same people vote on it for a second time? If this can happen, would there not be problems associated with that predictament?

I don't see any reason to believe that the voting system would allow the same user to vote twice on any image, regardless of the delay between votes.

Taken from the Code of Conduct....section 2-e

Once an image has been uploaded to the site it should not be uploaded again unless substantial changes have been made to it. These changes should be enough so that it could be reasonably assumed that the resulting changed image would receive a better critique than the previous version.
