Pretend you have infinite control over this shot. Depth of field, focal point, lighting, and even arrangement are in your control. What would you do? I would love some ideas to help me make a few more creative shots of these gears.

/\ With some changes incorporated, per another member's input.
On the run/drive-by thoughts for now..
I like the colour contrasts of the coloured version.
Caveats?
The part that is peeking in from the upper left. So..
A slight change in angle/camera shift to remove it from within frame.
And if the histogram in Photoshop is to believed/accurate, and following my initial thoughts when having viewed ... more light. Some fill flash, maybe?

As I was giving you some serious kudos in my mind on the note of a B & W conversion. Tonal range is/was wonderful for "Broken Too".
If I had to reiterate any suggestions where "Broken" is concerned, it would simply be to add some fill flash to bring out the elements within frame and to underscore your composition some more. (With a slight shift of camera position, as mentioned, to eliminate that one part.)
And a slightly wider/deeper DOF.
Which, segues to this..
Where both are concerned and comparatively speaking, if applicable ... what changes did you make insofar as camera setting go?
"what changes did you make insofar as camera setting go?" None. They were shot at the same time in a series of about 20. The built in flash may have adjusted its self but that and camera position are the only camera variables. It is all in the cropping and post processing.
"Tonal range is/was wonderful for "Broken Too"." Pushin them sliders to Hard!
My Latest Broken Three and Transmatic ( the same image) used focus stacking for depth of field. I think some creative off camera flash could improve lighting significantly.

"CombineZM (CZM) is an open source image processing software package for creating extended depth of field images. It runs on Windows XP and 2000. CombineZM is based on CombineZ5, a program which runs on older versions of Windows and is no longer maintained. It is superseded by CombineZP.
CombineZM is designed to blend the focused areas of several partially focused digital photographs in order to create a composite image with an extended depth of field (DOF), created from the in-focus areas of each image."

And here is the page (download/news/updates) for .. CombineZP
That looks like a winner for all the Windows using folks Les. I'm on a Mac so I chose to go with Zerene Stacker. So far so good. Too bad it's not free like CombineZ.
