For voting I don't think that it's fair that the people who worked so hard on their work should be graded on a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 ONLY being good... how about fantastic? great? wht I'm saying is that the vote should be fair. It should be like grades where 10 is like a A+ and 6 is a F and so on and so forth... think 'bout it
If 6 is an F, then what would 1 to 5 be? The way I see it is 1 = horrible, 5 = average, and 10 = great!, then the numbers in between are just different levels of my liking it. Everyone probably see's it a bit different, but that is probably the basic gist of it.
Yes, Tommy. And I want to go further: we should be more severe and reserve the 9 and the 10 for exceptional images. I find that there are too many images with 99/100. What do you think about that?
ok maybe I was a bit harsh on the grading... well VERy harsh wht I mean was 1-2 = F
3-4 = D
5-6 = C
7-8 = B
9-10 = A
Because i react to letter grades than comment grades
Caedes: I wish simply that the members don't give a '10' to all good images. There is a large gradation between 5 and 10. For me, an excellent image receive a nine and a ten is reserved for a fantastic shot, one of those which shatter me...
Although I haven't been here that long or cast that many votes yet, I didn't realise we were supposed to vote on every single picture we looked at, sorry. I only vote on the ones I think really stand out for whatever reason, usually giving them between a 6-9. Do people really bother to give low votes to pictures they don't like? Only a suggestion, but what about narrowing it down to a choice of 5 votes with 1= ok, 2 =good, 3 = very good, 4 = great and 5 = exceptional.
Actually I usually do the same as TP. Only oce I think have I given a vote below 5 (a 1), and that was for something which I thought looked like it took 5 seconds in Paint.
I think that as with so many things, people vote too high anyway. (Hmmm...may be shooting myself in the foot here...ok you can vote high on MY images). But seriously, I think a 10 should only be for something that is absolutely brilliant. I quite regularly give out like 7 or 8 for a good image and even 9 sometimes, but very rarely 10.
As for 1 to 5, I rarely give those to an image but that is because the standard of art is usually fairly decent. If something really is awful, I think it's only right to give it a low score.
At the end of the day, though, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying that I would never give any picture a low score, it's just that if I see a thumbnail of a pic I don't think I will like I don't bother to look at it... and therefore I don't vote for it...

Samatar & CaptainHero: I don't agree... If you want to have a representative score, you've to vote for all pictures: bad, good or excellent!
Personally, I vote for ALL photos (frome 0 to 10), but never for computer, abstract, fractal, ... pictures. That's my choice, because I don't feel able to appreciate the work to create this pictures. Except for some like 'Rebirth', which I like very much.
Oh, I agree, Pierre. I wasn't saying that it was right not to vote on 'bad' images. It is just laziness on my part that I sometimes don't bother looking at images that don't appeal from the thumbnail.
Ideally we should vote on all images (after all, if we only vote on images that we like, then they will always have high scores). Like you say though, Pierre, it might be more practicable to concentrate on one or two areas that you are interested in (especially given the recent influx of submissions).

I think that some people are not voting seriously and that the c-index are biased a little but maybe these people are voting seriously... who knos? People just take a glance at the picture and think that it's ok and give it a 10 or 9 becasue the picture is "good". That's why I think that the voting should be like grades. The grading system is better (in my opinion) than the system that we hav now because people hav a better sense what the difference is from a A and a F. I mean what is a "good" picture to you? or a average one? I may be wrong with my thinking here.
Another thing to consider is that, if you were to change the voting system, and it was effective in changing the way people vote, it would mean all the current pics on the site (which already have ratings) would be "out of sync" with everything that came after the change...
Well but we would kno from the c-index if it is like let's say 68:100 we would kno that it's a C. 5-6:C Do you kno wht I'm saying? The c-index would be the same execpt for the voting part... the number system... 1-10 would stay the same. just how much they are valued is changed
I think this ties into the other thread of "When does art become wallpaper?" I found this site looking for wallpaper but continue to visit for what I'd consider art. I think the best way to add meaning to the voting results, and direction to the site as a whole, would be to allow the artists to categorize the images as intended for viewing, background, or both because, to be blunt, what might be a great wallpaper might not be worth a view on its own.
The voting system has already changed. It used to be only possible to rate an image as "below average", "average", or "above average". The system was changed to a 1-10 scale to allow users more freedom to rate images, not just "good" or "bad".
What would be ideal is getting the word out more about properly rating images, something Caedes is doing with the FAQ that's being put together.
If you're looking at one image in particular though, remember that the voting is completely subjective. Not everyone agrees on what is good or bad.
And rememeber, votes are only part of the feedback system, you can always tell and explain your voting in the comments on an image.
