Resolution-Evolution

This may have been mentioned already, I glanced over the headings and did not see it. If I missed it please forgive me. Let me start off with my screen resolution, 5760 x 1080. Needless to say, and most unfortunate, I cannot use any backgrounds including my own on this rig from this website. I do not have a tri-screen setup independent from one another but rather three screens that work as one large viewing area. The technology is called 3d Surround. The availability of such a background is difficult to obtain to say the least. Very few legitimately host such resolution and many that claim to do not. To date there are only two that I have found that honestly host such resolutions with decent content. I am a member of both. Even then the selection is far and few and mostly duplicated from other images around the net. Before you flame me I agree this is definitely not mainstream simply due to the cost of the setup. However, with powerhouses fighting for dominance over the GPU industry aka Nvidia and ATI and monitor cost falling like a rock this is quickly taking forefront in the GPU battle. Even duel monitor setups were unheard of only a couple years ago and unarguably main stream today. As a webmaster myself over several websites I more than understand the boundaries of bandwidth and quality over quantity. I am sure there is a simple way to obtain the desired result. Just a suggestion, allow only one large upload over two at larger resolutions maintaining the current bandwidth usage. I realize I am but a small whisper in an ocean of shouts, however there are thousands of whispers in the ocean and were growing quickly. For such a small request I do believe the impact will be large. It is inevitable that this happens, the question is do we pioneer the revolution in evolution of computer technology. Or do we follow the standered thats safe and wait for the niche to become the norm? If nothing less please take a moment to ponder it over before flushing the idea of allowing larger legit use resolutions.

There are other issues to this. Firstly, the storage needed for such large images. Secondly, the ability for such images to be downloaded and printed, something that already happens at current resolutions and one reason why I do not post above 1920x1200.

Lastly, the resolution you state is a 5:1 aspect ratio. Very little artwork exists at such an aspect ratio, other than panoramas. That is not to say that such images should not be created and allowed on Caedes, but I feel that from an artistic perspective it is one that would be very difficult to create for.

I don't think the issue is so much the resolution allowed on the site so much as that very few people are creating wallpaper images in these resolutions. I recall a few years back there was a thread that asked if more people could upload duel or tri screen desktop images but only about two members of the site actually did this (they might still be around somewhere).

Even if the resolution you want is not available as a single image is there any reason that multiple images can't be uploaded and just stitched together afterward? Or am I missing something... I admit I know practically nothing about the type of setup you are referring to.

I guess that's the price you pay for being a pioneer!

So why aren't higher resolutions allowed? I wouldn't expect many people to upload them, but there might be a few. I wouldn't mind doing one as a challenge.

I imagine it's mostly to do with storage/bandwidth as Coram9 mentioned. If it was a simple matter to allow twice the size I'm sure Geri would allow it. It is possible though that allowances are less restrictive now though so maybe it's just a matter of bringing things up to date.

Interesting idea.

And I quote, from our beloved webmaster;

"The original image was featured on *APotD. It has been modified to fit on dual-monitors, each at 1600x1200 pixels.

*Perhaps, some others might be found at this linked site? As opposed to that of 'traditional wallpaper' sites?

Given that the current image size restrictions (pixel wise) is now at 3200 X 3200, I don't think it is such a stretch that triple monitors will be accommodated in some time.

Artistically?

Outside of photographic panoramas (there are more than a few of these on site), space, fantasy/sci-fi fantasy thematic desktops/wallpapers ... not sure of the artistic boundaries that such an aspect ratio would 'enforce'.

Guess it comes down to undergoing an artistic mental paradigm shift of sorts and then ... it is up to our imaginations.

Mind you, time would be a factor methinks, in creating such images or works.

Still need the raw CPU/GPU processing power and there is the question as to whether or not image editing software/creation programs have done likewise in taking images of this size into account.

... ...

... ...

I made half of this stuff up.. as I went along. Sounds good good, though, doesn't it?
