When does photo editing and processing become manipulation

As I look through the newer photographs I notice more and more that we are taking editing to a whole new level. No longer is a photograph a good photograph unless relatively intense editing (or whatever you want to call it) is used. Maybe I bring this up because i don't know how to do all that others are doing. I just wanted to see how others feel about this.

My own feelings on this is that once a photograph has been edited beyond changes to contrast, saturation, some cropping, and perhaps removal of the odd blemish, it should be acknowledged as a manipulation. I do not think there is anything wrong in this, as this is a desktop image site and not a photographic site and manipulations make for some stunning images. I do feel that some honesty should be used and if, say, the sky has been replaced the artist might at least say so, as it is part of the acceptable artistic process, even if the resulting image is not posted as a manipulation.

I agree. Some manipulations are marvelous. I'm all for that but they shouldn't be with the straight but slightly enhanced ones. Does this go for HDR (maybe it could have its own gallery), sky replacement and some of the other filtering that some are doing.
I look at some of the work some of the fine photographers on this site are doing and notice that there's a great deal in the upload that is far from normal editing.

I should of course admit to doing the same myself, especially on some of my earlier pictures which made use of various post processing filters which I did not admit to. So I stand guilty as charges and obviously slightly hypocritical. Where does one draw the line? I do darken, highlight, add bloom and use other effects on photographs but have never really changed whole skies or done other sort of manipulations. Where I have combined images I have always said so.

As far as the galleries go, I would only place a photo in "Manipulation" if I thought that was the most likely place someone would look for it; if I had just "enhanced" the original I don't think I would put it there (a good example might be my recent upload of the guggenheim exterior; heavily edited, but I placed it in Architecture as I think that's the most appropriate place for it). For me, images in the "Manip" gallery should almost have an abstract feel to them.

As far as what constitutes a manipulation in general photography, though, I would think anything that noticeably changes the photo from what it was when you took it qualifies as manipulation.

That would not be a manipulation, Ron.. that would be a minor miracle.

When I asked the question, I really wasn't joking. There are so many effects that people use and additions (such as skies from other pics) that I was curious as to where the line is drawn between enhancement and manipulation.

I would think if you have an unaltered image and you change anything that would be a manipulation.
Besides what difference does it make?Alter image before it goes into camera or after whats the difference?
You can have 5 cameras, same settings, lighting, angle everything the same and I would be willing to bet you would have 5 different images.Like people everyone sees something different.
Now I don't know that for sure because I haven't don't it but I would almost be willing to bet you my left testicle if 5 people did do it they would all come up with different conclusions, unless of couse there was money involved.LOL

Sam's given my definition - anything that changes it beyond what you were looking at when you took the image. Some things are subtle, and I don't think need to be called out as "manipulation", such as removing a pesky telephone pole. But I think that sky *replacement* is manipulation, in part because it changes the quality of what was there. The cast and tone that exist in the rest of the image as it came to be lit/reflected by the sky that was originally there.

Thanks, Cat, but we don't really separate those shots into the manip gallery do we?

Come on the gal has had the world handed to her,I had pity on her when the Mouse first exploited her.Once she started blowin the check and doing crazy stuff my sympathy went south.
Her name bring brought up in a manipulation thread is yet another joke.

By the way im talkin about her life not her appearance
