So I took this picture with the camera in a vertical position (it's black and white because that was the film I had to use). I can't for the life of me find a good layout to make it a good desktop. Anyone have an idea?

I've played around with it, and think I have a nice desktop format for you. I'll post it and give you a link to it when I can get to my server (probably tomorrow - or Monday morning for sure.)
Pride might not be a sin, although some may argue to the contrary, such as Christ. Isn't the size your signature, by the by, at least hypothetically sinful when compared with your proffered image? What are you tellng us?
Thanks, it looks good, but could you tell me exactly what you did? Texturing and gradient are obvious for the background, but how'd you get that border around the pic? Any fiddling with the colors?
I'm using Photoshop. 1st - I cut your photo out and pasted it into a 1600x1200 blank document. I used the levels command to enhance the darks and lights a little. 2nd - I control-clicked on the layer which selected your image, made a new layer, and used the Select-modify-expand command to make the selection slightly bigger. Then I held down the shift key and added the horiztonals to the selection. 3rd - I filled the selection with a dark grey to light grey gradient. Then I did the background with the same gradient in the opposite direction, which I also textured slightly. 4th - I changed the entire image from greyscale to RGB mode. Then for each layer I used the hue/saturation command, and checked the colorize checkbox. I set each layer a slightly different monochromatic color. 5th - I added layer effects to the middle layer - bevel and emboss, drop shadow. and used the text tool to cut out the text in that layer. Without getting too detailed - that's basically the procedure. Hope this all makes sense.
Nice work. Hopefully I'll get more in touch with PS, when I have the time. Finals are this week! And yes, your directions are pretty much straightforward, but I'll do something different, of course ;)
