The Great Debaters - Human Population vs Food Supply

Some, many.. postulate that given that human population growth is geometrical, and land is finite (considered a necessary resource for food production) ... it's doom and gloom on the horizon!

"Human population vs food supply: The key to ending global hunger"

And I quote;

"Even with a world population that continues to add tens of millions of new mouths every year, given continuing growth in Haber-Bosch fertilizer and a surprising trend toward a worldwide decline in birth rates (if you live about 50 years longer, according to the best estimates, you'll see humanity reach zero population growth), it might be within humanity's grasp to avoid mass starvation forever."

My understanding is that the problem is not so much food production, but distribution. The amount of food that is wasted in the western world would probably be enough to feed everyone else who needed it, if there was a way to get it to them without spoiling (which you'd think wouldn't be that complicated... cans would probably work). I recall seeing something in school that pointed out the atrocious waste that occurs with all the vegetables that farmers are unable to sell which is destroyed each year. Something to do with keeping market conditions stable or some such...

If worse comes to worse our decedents may just eat each other like as cockroaches do when the population exceeds the food supply. Soylent Green any one? On the other hand continuing technological advances will continue to make life easier. The result? Less hard work and physical activity of any kind leading to poorer health and a decreasing population.

Agreed, David.

Quoting from the linked article above once more;

"Instead of mass starvation, we seem to be awash in food. And it's not just the US. Obesity is on the increase in Mexico. Fat-related diabetes is becoming epidemic in India.

One in four people in China is overweight, more than 60 million are obese, and the rate of overweight children has increased almost 30-fold since 1985. Everywhere you look, from Buffalo to Beijing, you can see ballooning bellies.

The underlying answer is this: There's a lot of cheap food around. Yes, walk into your local mega-grocery-emporium or just about any food-selling area anywhere in the world and stare the problem in the face. There's inexpensive, high-calorie food piled all over the place."

If you get the chance there are several good good documentaries on the changes that have occurred within the food industry. Particularly on the note of corporate controlled enterprises.

Such as ... "Food, Inc."

/\ Very scary stuff.
