Photographing diverse groups

Does anyone know of any camera settings that work well when photographing a diverse group of people with different skin colors? I have tried, but with no luck. I ultimately ended up adjusting the brightness with a photo editing program. When doing that though, some of the people in the group became a bit too bright & washed out looking. Trying to play with the saturation didn't help either. The location was in a low light area which only served to increase the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated for the future! Thanks :~)

Question: is the group outside or inside?
You know I like to take people's photos. I had many difficulties with black people under the sun (see here).
The only way is to use your flash (yes, under the sun). The flash clears up the faces and obscures the background.
Don't forget a basic flash works on 3 to 5 meters. You must use a more powerful flash for longer distance.

Photoshop CS handles this quite well by working with skin tones and shading.
