Comparison Booth?

After reading the discussion thread Variations yesterday, I thought of a possible alternative to the Voting Booth.

Instead of giving scores to images, we could be offered random pairs of images. We pick one, saying "I like this one best". It wouldn't mean we don't like the other; just that we don't like it as much as the image we chose.

It would be more meaningful if the computer only let us compare like with like… in general, separating photos from CGI. That way, if there are those who rarely give anything other than a 0, 10 (or whatever) to certain genres, (or even to popular subjects like sunsets and flowers), they still have to say "well, this one's better than that one…" which is more information than we were getting before.

The computer should keep the pairs mixed up, and not keep offering the same two images to different people. :-)

Eventually, perhaps, some images would gather more points than others. It could mean that images currently withheld from the voting booth are still considered for inclusion on the home page (unless also withheld from this comparison system).

It might even (dare I say it) give more and better possibilities than the nomination button.

The two systems (Voting Booth and Comparison) could be run side by side for a while, and results compared…

I'm not saying this a perfect idea; perhaps the results would be too chaotic, or it would mean too much work setting it up... just that it's a possible alternative if you're looking for one. :-)

Nice, simple idea. I think it has been suggested before but I could be wrong...

You are one smart cookie. :o)

Not taking anything away from your suggestion here, yes, it has been put forth as an alternative in the past.

Perhaps, this might stimulate or provide impetus on a rethink of the current voting process.

The idea put forth before was to present a group of images to the voter (more than two, can't quite recall the exact number). And I believe the discussion at that time also took into consideration voting and that of promoting images.

(If inclined, might find it on the "Caedes for a day" discussion thread where the idea was revived/mentioned once more.)

I got up at 4.30 in the morning (already being sleepless) to change renders. (No, not nappies).

I thought "I'll just have a quick look at Caedes and see if there are any messages, then go back to bed"... and here is your post saying "maybe it's on the Caedes for a Day thread."

So I pop over there and it goes on for pages!

About a fifth of the way down (still not found the voting suggestion in question) I find Sam's comment "If I was Caedes for a day I think I would now have to dedicate the entire 24 hours to reading this thread..."

Chortle.

Having got to the end... nope, can't see the suggestion in its previous life. :-) Either my brain went numb, or it was on another thread. If we could think of a search term that would nail it...?

Found it .. "Maintaining Quality".

/\ Wendy's; aka .WENPEDER post at 23/01/08 23:38.

At least it is one of the mentions that I recall, and one of the more recent'ish ones of employing a comparative structuring of images for voting, etc..

(Plus..

There's loads of good good 'stuff' on that thread.

For example;

"It's a historical trend - people complained when their images were deleted under the old system, then they complained that snaps got rejected, then they complained that their images were archived. You cant please all the people all the time or, apparently, you just can't please people. Period."

Lol.)

I think I might have even suggested this idea to Geri once, based on one of the "games" at gwap.com (which is set up to rate internet images based exactly on the system suggested above, except that it is timed and you get points based on how many people agreed with your choice. A system which adds a fun basis to voting, and also encourages people to make a sensible choice, rather than just clicking randomly).

Ah, I see, I was wondering who it was... anyway, great minds think alike. :D

On my computer Wen's post is dated the 24th, not the 23rd... I guess we have different time settings.

Anyway, I think it would be a fun system, and it would be especially interesting to compare the results to the current voting booth figures. If I were Caedes for a month (a day wouldn't be enough!) I would be trying it out.

That sounds a good game, Sam, though I'm not sure I how well I would do if my vote was compared to everyone else's! We were in an art exhibition today, and I have a favourite artist there. Bought a small framed picture of hers last year (couldn't afford a larger one). This year she had several, and even the best of them hasn't yet sold (I was in love with it!) There are other paintings by other artists which are guaranteed to sell -- they all sold very early on.

We had to vote for our favourite, and I chose that one (a fine abstract design). There were some big, beautiful paintings (flowers, landscapes, gardens etc) which are more likely to win (the hot sellers), but I voted for the one I would have taken home.
